A women was going in for a Cesarean because her twins were over due, but the only one available to go in with her was her brother and he was quite a kidder.
The surgery was a success,
she now had to healthy babies,
a boy and a girl.
The mother, Ann, started to tell there nurse their names,
but the nurse said her brother had already told them the babies names.
Which made Ann concerned.
What did he say was the girls name?
Denise
Oh, she thought, that’s ok.
What did he name the boy?
De-nephew?
We looked last time at one of the names given to Jesus,
Emmanuel, which means what? God with us
God with us,
what peace that can bring to know that
God is with us,
That He knows us,
as He says in Jeremiah
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Those are encouraging words, that we can rely on because
Emanuel
God is with us,
if we are in His family.
So today we are going to look at some other names given to Jesus.
In Luke chapter 1, the angel Gabriel pays a visit to Zechariah who is a priest and he is taking a turn, replacing the incense to burn before the Lord in the temple.
The angel Gabriel told his that his wife Elizabeth would bear him a son. Which sounded a little too hard to believe.
Because of his doubt, the only sign Zechariah was given was the inability to talk until his son John the Baptist was born.
Some months later but also in Luke chapter 1, the angel Gabriel visits Mary,
a virgin, formally engaged to Joseph in Nazareth.

Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you
Had Mary done anything to yet to warrant this greeting?
No, not that we know of,
nothing is said about
her faith,
her devotion to God
her great acts of charity.
If she had done anything exceptional in her life so far,
Well, it’s not mentioned in the Gospels.
All that we know is she was a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph.
The greeting conveys how she is seen in God’s eyes.
Highly Favored
This reminds me of Gideon's first greeting by an angel.
During the time of Judges,
Gideon, as you know was hiding out in a wine press pit, thrashing out grain.
Hoping the Midianites would not notice him and take the grain,
when the angel comes and greets Gideon, saying
12 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”
Gideon has not done anything mighty yet, but God sees Gideon,
He sees people like you and me
as the people we can be in Him
Mary was highly favored.
If we could see our full potential in Him, I wounder what we kind of titles God would give to us,
I wonder what good things we can accomplish with Him in our lives, the rest of our lives.
Mary carried, bore and raise the savior of the world
Gideon became a mighty judge and warrior for God.
What about you and me?
I wonder what positive attributes we might be surprised to hear, from God.

This is Gabriel’s message to Mary. . . . .
31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Title: The Son of the Most High
Title: The Son of the Most High
That would be another way of saying,
the Son of God.
That is a title we often see given to Jesus.
He also Identified with the title Son of Man.
So that was his first title, now what will He do?

The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
So he’s get’s David’s throne.

and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever;
How long did the angel say he will reign? Forever
and just to make it clear the angel also said what?

his kingdom will never end.”
Almost all kingdom end because the king, the leader dies
But if the Son of God is the King,
He can reign forever
Today after 2,000 years,
the kingdom of God is alive but not fully in place
The Son is with the Father
awaiting the day to return
when His kingdom will be setup forever.
This scripture comes from Isaiah 9:6-7 and has much more to say about Jesus.
illus: birth Announcements almost never say what career the person will have, unless their a Royal.
The birth announcement in Isaiah was over 700 years before Jesus was born, and it talks all about him.
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
So lets break this down

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
That is not really a title for Jesus or a task but
why was this son given?
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
The Son was given, because God loves you and me
He knew we needed help to get back to a right relationship with Him.
We needed someone to pay our debt of sin and
Jesus, the Son of God, is the only one who could do that so
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given

Here comes his reigning

and the government will be on his shoulders.
Here comes a list of names

And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor
A counselor who knows you,
knows all about your skills and abilities
your wants interest
strength and weaknesses
Just might give you good advise!
Really good advice
Talking about his death Jesus said
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
The Helper is how Greek word Paraclete is translated in the ESV

Mighty God,
Jesus is beginning to sound like more than just a mere man.
God the Father, showed His might, when he brought his people out of Egypt
And when Jesus returns, we will see His might.

Everlasting Father
The trouble with dynasties and kingdoms is that people die!
Did you notice right after Queen Elizabeth died,
everyone over there was out, asking for a better deal!
It was kind of disruptive.
But Jesus
as the Son of God
who died for our sins but rose again
He is at the right hand of the Father now,
never more to be disrupted by death
34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Prince of Peace
I wonder how many ways Jesus is our prince of peace.
Peace with God, because our sins are forgiven
Inner peace, from the insecurity
what if Im not good enough?
what if I don’t measuring up?
Peace with many of our neighbors because
we know we have to forgive them, if we want God’s forgiveness in my life.
Peace, the end of all wars because
the devil and all his minions have been removed
We can study all these names and that is great, but
if you had to give a name to Jesus, and your relationship with Him
what would you call him?

When a couple marries, both the husband and wife often gain new families.
Like it or not, it’s pretty common to receive a new mom and dad, your inlaws.
Some people start calling them mom and dad, they day they get married.
Some start doing it before they get married but
That was not the case with me.
As much as I liked them, and eventually loved them,
it took me years to get to the point were I was comfortable calling them mom and dad.
And although it felt awkward at first, I deliberately started calling Gladys mom
when that was where my heart was finally.
Many, if not all of you, call yourselves Christians, that is part of why people come to church.
But how close are you to God
How close are you to your lord and savior Jesus Christ.
Is He...... your Lord
Is He...... Emanuel, God with you
Is He...... your Counselor and comforter
Is He...... Everlasting and unchanging God to you
Is He...... Your Prince of Peace that you turn to in the darkest times
If not,
make Him those things today
and enjoy his birthday more and more.
