The Ministries of Jesus Week 5

Anointing

Robert Morris

We’re finishing our series on The Ministries of Jesus
Salvation, Mending, Freedom, Healing, and Anointing!
You can appropriate these anytime you need them! (Broken Heart)
Will the real Jesus stand up? This is personal to me!
My uncle served in Viet Nam and came back with PTSD
He got saved but went to a church that only believed in Salvation
He had anger and guilt and emotional wounds that needed to be healed
He had dreams and addictive behaviors and shared with the Pastor
The Pastor said, “Jesus can’t help you!” He committed suicide!

Luke 4:16

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.

Luke 4:17

And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:

Luke 4:18

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed;

Luke 4:19

to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Luke 4:20

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.

Luke 4:21

And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Today, this Scripture is also fulfilled in your hearing!
Jesus not only saves us for eternity, but He can heal broken hearts
And set us free and open our physical and spiritual eyes today!
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me
This word anoint means to rub or smear thoroughly
God rubbed Jesus thoroughly with the Holy Spirit

Isaiah 21:5

Prepare the table, set a watchman in the tower, eat and drink. Arise, you princes, anoint the shield!

Isaiah 21:5 (NIV)

… oil the shields!
Many times, when we think about anointing with oil
We think about putting a little dab on a person’s forehead!

Genesis 28:18

Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it.

Exodus 29:7

“And you shall take the anointing oil, pour it on his head, and anoint him.”

1 Samuel 10:1

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed him and said: “Is it not because the Lord has anointed you commander over His inheritance?”

Matthew 26:7

a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table.
Many theologians believe it was about 16 ounces because it was a year’s wage
How would you like to have the oil of the Holy Spirit poured on you?
How would you like to be rubbed/smeared thoroughly with the Holy Spirit?
Since Jesus laid down His divinity and became a human
And He lived by the anointing of the Holy Spirit
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me…

Acts 10:38

“God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil”
Would you like to go about doing good and helping people?
Immersed us, clothed us, baptized us, and filled us with the Holy Spirit?
Wouldn’t the devil try to say negative things about this and confuse us?
And wouldn’t the devil even go so far as to tell us it’s wrong?
Are the last words of a person important?

Luke 24:49

“Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

Endue [enduo/en·doo·o/] To be clothed; to sink into clothing.

Over the years, I have many cleaners shrink my clothes
I’ve had some pants I’ve had to sink into or be poured into!
Wouldn’t it be great if Jesus Himself anointed us?
Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John tell us He does!!

Matthew 3:11

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

Mark 1:8

“I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Luke 3:16

John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

John 1:33

“I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’”
This word “Baptizo” in the Greek means to immerse
In the first century it was used to refer to dying fabrics
To immerse them in a dye to color them completely!

To dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge, to overwhelm. The clearest example that shows the meaning of “baptizo” is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander who lived about 200 BC. It is a recipe for making pickles. Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be “dipped” into boiling water and then “baptized” (baptizo) in the vinegar solution. The act of “baptizing” the vegetable produces a permanent change.

Would it be ok with you if Jesus dipped, (repeatedly) submerged,
And overwhelmed you with the Holy Spirit
That produced a permanent change in you?
What I’ve taught you in this series are the 5 foundational ministries of Jesus
And we can appropriate them by faith when we need them
When you need a broken heart healed, Jesus is there
When you need your spiritual eyes opened, Jesus is there
Or natural, medical, and miraculous healing, Jesus is there
When you need freedom from a bondage (addiction), Jesus is there
I am addicted to Bluebell! It’s every night now!
I bought syringes and injected it in my veins! (Long sleeve shirts)
And when you need a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit, Jesus is there!

Acts 4:31

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
These are some of the same people
Who were baptized with the Holy Spirit in Acts 2
Peter and John and their companions!

Psalm 92:10

I have been anointed with fresh oil.
How important are someone’s last words?
How important are Jesus’ last words?

John 14:16 (MSG)

“I will talk to the Father, and he’ll provide you another Friend so that you will always have someone with you.”

John 14:26 (MSG)

“The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you.”

John 16:7 (MSG)

“So let me say it again, this truth: It’s better for you that I leave. If I don’t leave, the Friend won’t come.”

John 16:12 (MSG)

“I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now.

John 16:13 (MSG)

But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is.”

Luke 24:49 (MSG)

“What comes next is very important: I am sending what my Father promised to you, so stay here in the city until He arrives, until you’re equipped with power from on high.”

Acts 1:4 (MSG)

As they met and ate meals together, he told them that they were on no account to leave Jerusalem but “must wait for what the Father promised: the promise you heard from me.

Acts 1:5 (MSG)

John baptized in water; you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 1:8 (MSG)

“And when the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the world.”

Acts 1:9 (MSG)

These were his last words.
He was anointed by the Holy Spirit to overcome temptation and help people!
He’s not going to leave us alone to try and make it on our own
He has given us the Holy Spirit
And He’s going to smear Him, and rub Him, and pour Him all over us
So, we can live victoriously, and help others
Get saved, set free, and healed also
