Branch from Jesse
Lets talk about Marvel and the MCU for a bit.
in marvel right now there is a bunch of kids or teens who are the success stories of their parents and we are going to see their ways.
We have characters like kate bishop who is not realted to hawkeye but follows his footsteps,
or we have she hulk who is a cousin of the Hulk but not the daughter of him.
However there is a few characters:
Skaar who is brand new and is the Hulks son.
That kid who Thor adopts (idk the name).
Scarlet Witch has those two boys one of who is supposed to be the new quicksilver
Even Gamora is OG kid of Thanos.
see there is something important about the kids of someone signifigant,
they either have the chance to be the Big Bad Guy or the Great Good Guy
The same things happened in scripture:
The kings would either be great or bad, and most of them had been related to one another, that they would screw it up for all of Israel or do great for the nation.
However we are not talking today about how those kings may have or may have not wrecked God’s plan for his people but rather we are talking about how God’s plan for his people was accomplished through one child.
We are in the Christmas season and of course that means that we have to spend a bit of time talking about how Jesus was born.
But before we even get to the Christmas story I want us to focus on what it was like before we even had a idea of a little boy named Jesus.
See Israel was going through the motions, they had been exiled and have had horrible kings who lead them there along with that they were just passively waiting and probably felt that God was not actively moving amoung them in the same ways he was before.
However God gives this prophecy to Isaiah to tell Israel about how God’s plans are still in action
We are going to read from Isaiah chapter 11 and this talks all about Jesus, and we can easily say that becuase we can read through the new testament and look at all the ways that this chapter says that Jesus will be all the things he is in the Gospels:
Isaiah tells of how there will be someone coming who is from the line of David.
First I want to talk about how a shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse.
Anyone know who Jesse is?
Yeah Jesse is King Davids Dad,
so what does that mean, well we can think in their shoes and say oh this must be about King David but really its talking about how someone will come as Isaiah looks forward from his time.
That someone being Jesus,
See if you have ever skipped the genologoies like in Matthew you could see that from David comes many many people that being the last is Jesus.
Jesus is like the “Great x10” grandson of King David, and so he is the shoot that comes from Jesse.
And the spirit resting on him comes on and we at Jesus baptism it this being fufilled.
However what we really want to look at is that Jesus was prohecied so long before he was actually born.
that he would be born and fufill these things to come, the Holy spirit coming onto him and that he would go on more as we read in verse 4:
Coming to the poor
So what happens when Jesus grows up?
He helps the poor, the Beatitudes is huge example of this where he suggests that the people who have the least will actual end up having the most.
Jesus eats with sinners,
Helps the widows,
The sick he heals,
Jesus in every way lives a righteous and faithful life because that is who he is.
Jesus is the fulfillment of this prophecy.
All in all is that this says God did not send Jesus without a direct plan of how he would play into the redemption of all mankind.
That God would not just send Jesus to be born amoung the rich and to cater to the wealthy but to flip everything on its head of how we should be living life with one another.
that God sends Jesus and tell us these things so that we would perpare our hearts to do these things too, that the one we call the saviour would lead by example.
We would also want to follow and sit with sinners, support widows, pray for the sick.
Becuase of all the great things that Jesus is, becuase the prohecy only ramps up as we read more into Isaiah.
A Banner for peoples in all nations
That Jesus would be the banner that all be rally to and his Kingdom will be glorius:
Think about all the things we have talked about this year.
That Jesus would be for us : well Isaiah 11 says that clearly he will be that banner we can rally to, especially when we do not feel like we are apart of his groupy.
He calls all people to rally to him.
What does that practically mean, when Jesus died on the cross that he would die for everyones sins, whoever comes to him and accepts him as their saviour (that they ralley to him) they will be saved.
If you follow Jesus you are under his banner.
Even more that we would rind rest in his Kingdom, that when Jesus dies and rising again to life he is inviting us into the place where he rests, to be with him in eternal life.
Response:
Did you know that God had a plan to send his son from the beginning?
Jesus was not a after thought or a change of plans but is the plan after all.
That jesus would be born of Mary and fathered by Joseph which would make him fall into the David family tree,
That he would fufill what was said about him years before he was Born of being filled with the Spirit of the Lord and that he would be for the less then peoples of the world, that he would unite us all under his banner.
How do you respond to God’s plan?
Did you know that God had planned to send Jesus from the beginning?
Why do you think Isaiah got told about Jesus years before he was born?
Why is it important that we see Jesus as planned from the beginning?
How does Isaiah’s prophecy add to the Christmas story?
How should we apply Isaiah’s prophecy to our life?
