Theme: Jesus Calls
Key verse: v.5
39 verses; 949 words
Grade: 4.8
Outline:
I. The Call of the Lord. Vs.1-11
II. The Cleansing of a Leper. Vs.12-15
III. The Criticism of the Lost. Vs.16-26
IV. The Confusion of the Leaders. Vs.27-39
Two PRINCIPLES in the Master’s manual to deal with the lost.

I. We See Jesus In Private. v.16

16 And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.
NIV 62% difference
“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”
It wasn’t lonely where Jesus prayed and when we meet the Lord in prayer it is not lonely.
withdrew himself” - comes from two words: eimi hypochoron
“eimi” refers not to just the absence of people but the quality of as well.
“hypochoron” is to go off, withdraw. This is where people fail desiring companionship rather than fellowship.
prayed” - pray to; supplicate; worship
"A preacher needs to get away and get alone with the Lord and pray. Hanging around groups of preachers in restaurants gets you fat and backslid." (Dennis Carter)

II. We See Jesus In Public. v.17

17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
certain” - one, single; refers to a single person or thing.
(1828) - Particular (definition no.6); references: Mark 12:1, 42 “certain day” and v.42 “certain widow”
teaching” -
eimi (as in v.16) quality.
didasko - to impart skills or knowledge to
“Christ was more interested in proclaiming the message than in performing miracles.” (Analytical Bible Expositor. John Butler)
sitting” -
kathemai - to be located or situated somewhere.
Notice when most are found sitting they are backslid on God.
Examples: 1 Kings 13:14 (the man of God); Jonah 4:5 (Jonah)
power” -
dynamis (viamiss): power; possession of controlling influence over the divine in a supernatural manner.
Power of the members of the body.
Power of the mind of the body.
Power of the motions of the body.
of the Lord” - denotes Who the power comes from
heal” - iaomai (yowamay)
To make a person healthy again.
Often a miraculous act bringing about perfect health.
them
Now look at the way verse 17 is worded. Jesus is teaching, and the “Pharisees and doctors of the law” are there listening to Him. The end of the verse says, “and the power of the Lord was present to heal THEM.”
Who is the “them”? In the verse, the antecedent is the “Pharisees and doctors of the law.” Well, they weren’t there to be healed; they weren’t sick.
Conclusion:
How is your prayer life?
How is your public life?
