Intro:
The Savior’s been crucified it is Friday night. His body has been prepped, He has been laid in the tomb, the tomb has been sealed, the guards have been posted is is Friday night. The disciples are scattered, the people afraid, the Pharisees hunting them down, its Friday night. Hope has been lost, the King lay dead, the enemy rejoices its Friday night. Anybody ever have a Friday night? I’ve been in that place of despair where it seems like there is no way out, no answers to the problems, all hope has faded, I have seen my fair share of Friday nights, but Sunday’s on the way!
John 20:15–16 NIV
He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
And folks, today Sunday’s here. It’s here everyday that we draw breath. I know it’s hard to see sometimes and we can be overwhelmed with the world we live in but Sunday’s here. The enemy is defeated and hope has been restored, Sunday’s here, now let’s read about it!

The Tomb

A. Mary
John 20:1–2 NIV
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
1. A Love for Jesus
2. Who is this Mary
B. Peter and John
John 20:3–4 NIV
So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
1. John out ran Peter
a. Maybe a little ribbing here for posterity
i. Remember that John was younger than Peter
ii. Obviously faster
b. Seriously though
i. Careful what we add to
ii. Careful how we interpret, to read too much into this
2. Saw
John 20:5–7 NIV
He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
a. Strips of linen
b. Head wrapping
c. Compare and contrast with Lazarus
3. Believed
John 20:8–10 NIV
Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Mary

John 20:11 NIV
Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
A. Weeping
1. Great loss
a. Looking for closer
b. To finish preparing the body
c. Being able to say goodbye
d. Like the funerals of today
2. Did comprehend
John 20:12–15 NIV
and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
a. Didn’t know they were angels
b. Didn’t fall down, but asked
c. In her sorrow didn’t recognize Jesus
B. Jesus Calls
1. By Name
John 20:16 NIV
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
2. She immediately knows Him
a. Rabboni
i. Remember when I said this was a term deeper than mentor
ii. There is affection in it for the Jew
b. Not just a teacher, but a friend and a Savior
c. The call is personal
Tender call of a parent to a child, kinda that first middle last name call. Jesus truly knows us to our core. That’s what makes this moment so special.
C. Don’t Cling to Me
John 20:17–18 NIV
Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
1. Jesus isn’t hanging around
a. Still needs to impart the Holy Spirit
b. Still needs to give a few last instructions
2. My Father, Your Father
a. Jesus is solidifying the relationship
b. Letting them know it really has been finished
c. We are saved in Him!
3. I have seen
a. Funny that this in the Jewish culture would not be evidence
b. Because it is from a woman
c. Oh but how God makes us so foolish
1 Corinthians 1:27 NASB95
but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,
i. This so true
ii. About shaming our perspective
iii. Jesus was righting another wrong by appearing to Mary, a woman, first
iv. Shows the importance of women, we are all the same, sinners in need of a savior
d. Showing us that we need to reach all people with Christ
