Messianic Prophecy
This morning we will begin our Christmas Series
This was actually last yrs sermon
So I thought why try and reinvent the wheel just go with what we had last year
I know we just finished Thanksgiving and we do have a lot to be thankful for and most importantly we have a Messiah to be thankful for
Messiah is a Greek work that is translated to The Christ
We know the Christ is our Savior
Know we know that the Savior is Jesus Christ and we are going to celebrate his birth in about a month
This morning as we start to build up to the Birth of the Savior
I want us to look back on some things to see Christ
Jeremiah 23:5–6 NASB95
5 “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land. 6 “In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, ‘The Lord our righteousness.’
When we think of this verse we see the promise that Judah will be saved
The coming messiah is coming to save us
This is what the promise is all about that one day Judah will be saved
They were a lost people, we are and were a lost people
This coming promise was what everyone was so excited for
They were looking for someone to come in on a white horse and save them from the Romans
They were looking for salvation from a worldly occupation
JOhnny Lee was right when he sang the song, looking for love in all the wrong places
I think we are looking for a savior in all the wrong places just like the Hebrews were
They were looking for a savior in all the wrong places and doing all the wrong things
We would like a savior to come and think just like us, and to give us everything we want, and take away all that we think is bad and make everything easier
They were looking forward to the coming Messiah because it was something they had waited for
And something they had been told about for a long while
Isaiah 61:1–3 NASB95
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; 2 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3 To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
The coming Messiah has a message for the world
Church the message has not changed it is still the same as it was when this was written as it was when Jesus said it
The purpose of the coming savior was to bring freedom
Not in the sense that you and I think of freedom living in a county or being in prison but true freedom that Scripture talks about
The true freedom that comes from a personal relationship with Christ
The True freedom that says because of Jesus’s death and resurrection we can now have life
The purpose of the coming messiah was to seek out those who were lost
Matthew 18:11–14 NASB95
11 “For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost. 12 “What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying? 13 “If it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray. 14 “So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.
Jesus has come to seek out those who were lost
We all know the feeling of finding something that is lost
We all know that no one looks for things that are not lost
Jesus did not come to help the righteous or to seek out the righteous
Jesus came only to seek out the Lost and to save the lost
The nation of Israel was lost
Jesus came so long ago to save the nation of Israel
Church today we have a lost world
Jesus came to search out those who are lost
He did not come to find those who were not lost or to save those who did not need saving
This was the purpose of the coming Messiah
Praise the Lord for the promise of a coming savior who came to search out those who were lost
Because church I was lost once
You were lost once
2 Corinthians 5:18–19 NASB95
18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
The purpose of the coming messiah was to reconcile us to God
To reconcile is the restoration of friendly relations
to Save Judah
so that Israel will be able to dwell securely
That was the purpose of the coming messiah but before he could accomplish all that he had to reconcile us to himself through Christ
We had to be right with God
It was something that you and I could not do
It was something that the national of Israel could not do
No matter how hard you work at being good it will never accomplish being reconciled to God
No matter how much the nation of Israel repenting and trusted in Jesus it would never accomplish completely the reconciliation to God
It is only because of the grace of God that reconciliation happens through Christ
That was the purpose of the coming messiah
That was the fulfillment of the promised one
2 Corinthians 5:20–21 NASB95
20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Because of the grace of God he fulfilled the promise he made so long ago to save Judah, to allow Israel to dwell securely
God made Jesus who was sinless and perfect in eery way to take on thew worlds sin
The thing that separated us from God
The thing that made it impossible to be reconciled to God
God sent Jesus to take that on
Because sin leads to death Jesus died
This was the fulfillment of the promise
Jesus defeated death by rising from the dead
And because of that we can not be reconciled to God through Christ
We can now be saved the fulfillment of the promise in Jeremiah
We can now dwell safely the fulfillment of the promise in Jeremiah
This was the coming promise that so excited everyone some 2000 years about about the coming Christ
Praise the Lord church
This was the purpose of the coming promise that we read about through the old testament
We will move into a time of invitation
As the band comes up
I want to invite you to the front if you are here today and do not know Jesus
Because of the grace of God in sending Jesus to be sin in our place we can have freedom and peace and life
You can leave this building this morning because of the grace of God this morning in sending Jesus to fulfill the promise made so long ago
or maybe you already have a personal relationship with Jesus this morning and simply need to spend time with Jesus in prayer at the altar
the altar is open
