I was thinking about the idea of giving thanks. Why do we do it? Isn’t there a lot bad things going both personally and in the world?
Yet as Jesus followers we feel compelled even driven to be thankful. So why?
Bible tells us to -
Colossians 3:15 NASB95
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.
2. That is, have an attitude of thankfulness or gratitude.
Salvation is connected to Thanksgiving
Psalm 50:23 NASB95
23 “He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God.”
3. As Christians we know the truth about who God is and who we are not. God is Holy I am a sinner.
4. We understand God’s righteous requirements and that we know we could not on our own fulfill them
5. We are thankful because Jesus Christ has fulfilled God’s righteous requirements for us.
John 3:16 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
6. You and I can be thankful because are names are written in heaven.
Luke 10:17–20 NASB95
17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
7. I am thankful because God chose me.
John 15:16 NASB95
16 “You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
8. I am thankful because God has arranged my life for good
Romans 8:28 NASB95
28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
9. I am thankful because Jesus is coming again to receive me and you.
John 14:1–4 NASB95
1 “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. 4 “And you know the way where I am going.”
