Does He Though?

on the individual level, we experience high prices of food and other necessities, family unrest, crap work situations, bills bills bills, MORE bills genocides,
On a global and historical level we see wars, disease, famine, political upheaval
It’s legitimate to grapple with the questions. Is there a plan? Does God care? Does God know what he’s doing? Can we trust Him? why are the bad guys in power? Do I matter? does the way that I live matter?
Who is in charge around here?
“easy miss, I’ve got you” “You’ve got me? Who’s got you?!!”
The book of Daniel addresses this issue.
Author: Daniel (disputed due to the supernatural nature of his prophetic visions)
a word about prophecy...
Audience: Israel in Exile /Israel in oppression
What’s in there?:
1st half - Historical Narrative
2nd half - Apocalyptic visions

1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. 3 Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, 4 youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king’s palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. 5 The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. 6 Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.

Ok here we go, the bad guys are winning, God’s people are being mistreated. Who’s got this?
There is a VERY important phrase in this passage in verse 2:

The Lord Gave Judah to Babylon

Why did God give Judah to Babylon?
He made a covenant with Israel
English Standard Version Deuteronomy 30:15–20

15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. 16 If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you today, by loving the LORD your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, 20 loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

The book of Daniel confirms that the judgement they are experiencing in Babylon is the result of disobeying God.
Dan 9:11 All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. And the curse and oath that are written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. 12 He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, by bringing upon us a great calamity. For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem. 13 As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. 14 Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice.
2 Kings 23:36 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zebidah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. 37 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done. 24 In his days, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant for three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him. 2 And the Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldeans and bands of the Syrians and bands of the Moabites and bands of the Ammonites, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by his servants the prophets. 3 Surely this came upon Judah at the command of the Lord, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done, 4 and also for the innocent blood that he had shed. For he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord would not pardon. 5 Now the rest of the deeds of Jehoiakim and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 6 So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers
So God knew exactly what He was doing
But we have this king Nebuchadnezzer. He THINKS he is in charge and that there is no one more powerful than He is.
The babylonians conquered much of the known world and he truly was the most powerful man at the time

The Babylonian Kings Plan

vs 3-5
Daniel1:2b. with some of the vessels of the house of God.
A. Taking the true God’s articles into a false god’s temple was a human attempt at overshadowing and absorbing God’s power
B. Taking the best and brightest young men and assimilating them and exploiting them was another way to subjugate the people, and absorb their knowledge and by proxy their God’s power.

They had beautiful Hebrew names that godly parents might meaningfully give their children. All four names testify to Israel’s God, Yahweh. Daniel means, “El (God) is my judge.” Hananiah means, “Yah (Yahweh) has been gracious.” Mishael means, “Who is what El (God) is?” and Azariah means, “Yah (Yahweh) has helped.”

Unfortunately, the first thing the palace master does is to replace these beautiful names. These young men need to be cut off from their past and cut off from their God. Their identity needs to change from Israelite youths to Babylonian wise men. So the palace master replaces the beautiful Hebrew names with Babylonian names with references to Babylonian gods. Verse 7, “The palace master gave them other names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar,” which probably means “May Bel protect his life”—Bel means “lord,” referring to the Babylonian head god, Marduk. “Hananiah he called Shadrach,” which means “The command of Aku,” the moon god, or “The command of Marduk,” the head god. “Mishael he called Meshach,” which may mean, “Who is what Aku is?” And, finally, “Azariah he called Abednego,” which means “Servant of Nebo,” the Babylonian god of wisdom and agriculture. Instead of serving Yahweh, the God of Israel, from now on these young men are in the service of Babylon and its gods.

The REAL Kings Plan

Dan 1:6  Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.
No matter what it looks like, no matter what it feels like, God’s got ALL this!
people make and carry false gods , people carry away the holy articles from the temple, people make plans
God rules - sovereignty:God’s all-encompassing rule over the entire universe.
As his people, that should give us confidence.
people carry gods - God carries his people
English Standard Version (Isaiah 40:10–11)
10 Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11  He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.
“no one can snatch us out of the fathers hand”
Rom 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2. God uses individuals, the way we live matters, being different matters
3. Loss of political power for God’s people is not the same as loss of power for God or that His plan is being thwarted
Phil 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
John 17:14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
God GAVE Israel into captivity
We are going to see that In exile God will give and provide
AND God GIVES his only son
No matter what it looks like, no matter what it feels like, God’s got ALL this!
peace and confidence for the now
Hope for the future
