with the kids
Sometimes we are alone, or un-supervised.
That can be a fun,
we might even do things we know we shouldn’t do
just because we want to!
But it can also be scary!
Some of those things we want to do, might get us hurt
or killed.
Have you ever seen Mary Poppins?
In the beginning of the original movie, Mary Poppins come gliding in from the sky,
holding onto her umbrella.
My sister and I had seen it.
My two girl cousins had seen it and
One time when we were together, we got this idea that was not very smart.
We got some umbrella’s and climbed on the roof,
all four of us,
each had an umbrella
we opened them up and ran off the roof of our house.
Suddenly, we were all on the ground,
so fast.
nobody got badly hurt,
but it hurt to fall that far.
Every umbrella was bent backwards.
they didn’t seem to break our falls at all.
Being home alone can be dangerous.
Sometimes we can be scared and wish someone was with us.
Today with the adults, we are going to look at a name for Jesus you can find in the Bible.
Immanuel or Emmanuel, which mean’s God with us, or God is with us.
Because Jesus came as a little baby
He could grow up and be our savior
He could die for us on the Cross and them after raising on the third day
He could send his Holy Spirit to live in side each one of us.
That means, if we are a Christian,
if Jesus is in our heart
we are never alone.
We know He will always be with us, to help us through hard times and
He can also always guide us, what to do, or not do, because He is in our heart.
I want to pray for each of you, that you will early
tell God you are sorry for the bad things you have done, or wanted to do
ask God to live in your heart
be thankful that He is in your heart and
be listening to his voice, whether He is whispering advice or
seemingly yelling at you.

Immanuel, God with us
Immanuel, God with us
Immanuel, which means, “God is with you”, is one of the names,
one of the titles
given to Jesus in the Bible.
It was first given in a prophecy of Isaiah as assurance to King Ahaz
that his current enemies would not conquer the land. (Isaiah 7:14)
Today the promise of God with us,
does not mean we will not have troubles,
but that He will be with us, he will see us through our troubles.
Over 100 years ago, Civilla D. Martin and her husband Walter, were staying at the Practical Bible Training School in
Lestershire, New York. 📷
Mr. Martin was helping the principal put together a songbook.
One Sunday, Mr. Martin was supposed to go preach at a church some distance from the school.
But, Civilla wasn’t feeling,
so Mr. Martin was considering canceling his commitment
to preach that morning,
to stay home and take care of her.
To which their 9 year old boy said
"Don't you think God will take care of her?"
It was quickly decided that Mr. Martin would go preach that morning and
Civilla would stay in their room.
That day,
Civilla dwelled on those faithful words,
their son spoke that morning and by the time Walter returned from preaching, she had a whole song written,
all the lyrics,
it just needed some music.
Walter, took the lyrics to the organ and within an hour had come up with a tune for the song. 📷
Later that same evening, a couple of the teachers came by and they sang the hymn.
Later in the week, it was sung at a school assembly and
then added to the new songbook.
The Hymn is
God Will take care of You
And it begins like this.
Verse 1
Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.
Refrain:
God will take care of you,
Through every day, over all the way;

God will take care of you.

Through days of toil when heart doth fail,
God will take care of you;
When dangers fierce your path assail,
God will take care of you.
Verse 3
All you may need He will provide,

Nothing you ask will be denied,

Verse 4
No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon His breast,
God will take care of you.
In the Old Testament, the prophecy is in Isaiah 7:14.
Here is where we find Immanuel in the New Testament
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
We can find a sense of God’s presence in the Old Testament.

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,

your right hand will hold me fast.
That was true then and is true now and yet, the promise of God with Us
is something more.
23 “Am I only a God nearby,”
declares the Lord,
“and not a God far away?
24 Who can hide in secret places
so that I cannot see them?”
declares the Lord.
“Do not I fill heaven and earth?”
declares the Lord.
Clearly God was, and is everywhere, and yet
the promise of God with us
God in us, is more
more personal
A new testament verse that shares this same kind of vision might be
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
Also in Roman’s 8
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thought it was his own story, but he didn’t claim it as his own.

On Christmas Eve a nice, decent man who couldn’t imagine God becoming a man, refused to go to church with his family, so they went without him.
That night a small flock of birds tried to get into his warm house through the window, because it was so bitter cold.
The man opened the barn to give them a warm place to shelter, but they would not go in.
He tried food,
he tried calling them
he dried chasing them.
They just saw him as a big scary threat, and kept their distance.
It broke his heart to think these birds would all died for fear of trusting him.
If only he could become a little bird, and talk with them
and convince them to go in the barn.
As the story goes, that is when he heard the church bell from town and
no longer had a problem with the story of the incarnation,
God come down to save the world.
One man I read said,
Jesus incarnation was God’s declaration of purpose to save the world.
What if God Responded like we do?

What if He
used His power,
climbed down from the cross and said
I’m out of here, these people aren’t worth it!
We would still be lost, in our sinful condition!
Thank God that He is not exactly like us.
What are the implications of God with us
we are more precious then we can imagine.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
What do we gain from God with us?
What do we gain from God with us?
Do you know the story of the High Priest Eli and his wicked sons?
In 1 Samuel 4 the Israelites and the Philistines were fighting and Isreal didn’t do very good
4,000 men deserted that day
So the army sent word,
bring the Arch so God will fight for us.
Eli’s sons Hophni and Phinehas took the Ark out to the war and the Israelites were really loud and excited.
The Philistines notice this and were snooping around, why are the Israelites so excited tonight.
They heard that the Israelites had brought their God out to fight for them.
That terrified them but instead of breaking camp and running they said
they used to be slaves
if we don’t defeat them tomorrow
we will all be their slaves.
So they fought really hard and won,
they captured the Ark
Hophni and Phinehas were both killed in the battle.
God with us is not like an object we can carry on us,
God with us was, Jesus life, death and resurrection on earth and
Now is His presence in our hearts.

Jesus last words before departing this earth were
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
Because why?
because he always lives to intercede for them.
He always intercedes for you
He always intercedes for me.
I rejoice in Emmanuel,
God with us
This Christmas,
be thankful that Jesus came,
He was, one of us
yet He did not sin
He lived, and taught to save us, and to save many others.
He died for us
He was raised,
to intercede for us.
This Christmas,
take Joy in the Emmanuel and
His work
on your behalf.
