Psalm 92:1 KJV 1900
1 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, And to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:

Why is it good?

1. It gives the Lord the glory due unto Him

Psalm 96:8 “8 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come into his courts.”

2. It makes us glad

Psalm 92:4 “4 For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.”

There are biblical commands to pursue our joy in God.

Psalm 37:4 “4 Delight thyself also in the Lord; And he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
Psalm 33:1 “1 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: For praise is comely for the upright.”
Psalm 33:1 KJV 1900
1 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: For praise is comely for the upright.

There is a biblical threat if we will not pursue our joy in God.

Deut 28:47-48 “47 Because thou servedst not the Lord thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the Lord shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.”

3. It captures our imagination and causes us to wonder

Psalm 92:5-6 “5 O Lord, how great are thy works! And thy thoughts are very deep. 6 A brutish man knoweth not; Neither doth a fool understand this.”
The New Testament has lots to say about self-denial, but not about self-denial as an end in itself.
We are told to deny ourselves and to take up our crosses in order that we may follow Christ; and nearly every description of what we shall ultimately find if we do so contains an appeal to desire.

4. Giving thinks keeps you from giving up

2 Cor 4:16 “16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”
Paul is being renewed by something he can’t see. 2 Cor 4:18 “18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:18 KJV 1900
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

5. We will never properly value anything until we are grateful to God

2 Corinthians 8:1 “1 Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;”
2 Corinthians 8:1 KJV 1900
1 Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;
Without gratitude for God our gratitude for everything else is only valuing how it makes us feel. This is not love.
Simply: An ungrateful dad is a grumpy dad and a grumpy dad is not a godly dad

Love for people is the overflow of gladness in God.
