WE GET TO BE A PART, LIVING STONES, IN BODY!

And we will see from the text this morning that our worship response to God in light of all he’s done for us is to turn from divisive sins and to set our desires on spiritual things and proclaim the goodness of the one who brought us from darkness into marvelous light.

"SO” = in light of WORK of CHRIST, PREVIOUSLY STATED.

a mean-spirited or vicious attitude or disposition, “ill will” (BDAG)
A CHANGED DISPOSITION...

NOT ACTORS, NO DOUBLE LIFE.
4. Envy
ENGLISH: “a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone’s else’s possessions, qualities or, luck”
5. Slander
“The act of speaking ill of another...evil speech, slander, defamation” (BDAG)
FIVE VICES = RELATIONAL, REQUIRE OBJECTS

2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—
3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
COMMANDED to LONG/DESIRE/YEARN
BABIES HAVE LEGITIMATE NEED.
NOT RESENTFUL LONGING of OTHERS…BUT LONGING FOR SPIRITUAL THINGS.
“Long/Desire/Yearn” here is a command! (has the implication of a need)
CONDITIONAL (1ST CLASS), HAVE I TASTED that THE LORD is GOOD?

So what is he saying here, D.A. Carson explains it well:
“The milk is their experience of the Lord himself, which they have already tasted. Now they are to abandon all sin and crave more of the experience of the Lord that they have already tasted and enjoyed, for ‘there can be no food beyond Christ’” (Commentary on the NT use of the OT, p. 1023).

SEPARATES/DIVIDES TWO GROUPS of PEOPLE...
1. BELIEVERS
NOT put to SHAME:
“disappoint”...of the shame and disappointment that come to one whose faith or hope is shown to be vain” (BDAG)
EMPHATIC DOUBLE NEGATIVE, BIG DEAL!
KEY TO HAPPINESS = LOW EXPECTATIONS?? NOT SO IN THE KINGDOM!
HOPE NOT IN VAIN! END TIME SALVATION = REAL.

2. NONBELIEVERS
REJECTED the CORNERSTONE
STUMBLE/BE OFFENDED W/ IT
***EXCLUSIVITY/SCANDAL of GOSPEL....BAD NAME for CHRISTIANS (2,000 YRS)!!
Transition: After comparing and contrasting the 2 types of people, Peter addresses us as believers.

10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
**STUMBLE = NOT BELIEVING…REJECT CHRIST.
BUT YOU ARE CHOSEN
Chosen race
DESCENDANTS of ABRAHAM through FAITH
Royal priesthood
SERVE our GOD/KING, CALLED OUT from CROWD.
Holy nation
SET APART/SEPARATE PEOPLE
LIKE ISRAEL- A LIGHT to GENTILES...
A people for his own possession
BELONG to HIM! SPECIAL PEOPLE
WE’RE UNIQUE in THIS WORLD…FAR FROM HOME…DON’T BELONG HERE.

What is the result of God’s work here??....(PURPOSE STATEMENT)...That WE WOULD PROCLAIM HIS EXCELLENCIES!

I want to ask you this morning, are you part of God’s building project as a living stone? Have you joined the Kingdom of God & been born again through faith, through the imperishable seed of the gospel, the word of Christ? If you haven’t, you can be saved today…
See all of us should have the assurance that we will not be put to shame on the last day. & you can have this today.
