Hosea 9

Intro: Marriage; the ultimate Means of Ministry & a picture of the

           Reality of a Real Relationship.

A-   Two examples in marriage that relate to our relationship with God and equate to our chapter tonight.

1-    1st, Marriage is God’s perfect provision.

Genesis 1:26, Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 2:25, And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

a-    God’s perfect provision, in that my wife is God’s provision into my life that completes me.

-         BUT it’s in our marriage with God that I am completely provided for.

Philippians 4:19 and my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

2-    2nd, Marriage is God’s perfect PROTECTION.

b-    God’s perfect protection, in that my wife is God’s protection into my life that emotionally completes me.

-         BUT it’s in our marriage with God that we are completely protected.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

> Last week, we saw in Chapter 8, a picture in Israel of our

society. In that we looked at:  5 sins that result from a people

who forget (ignore) the living God.

A- A people, although they know God, but decide to ignore

              God,  will:

#1- Ignore God’s word

#2- Will heap up for themselves leaders after their own lust,

      kings to fill their desires.

#3- Idolatry will reign.

#4- They will be unequally yoked.

#5- They will worship the worthless.

1-    But now that, sin has settled in,  what is to be the effect of transgression upon a society that so indulges???

a-    Well they’ll find that sin will:

#1- Destroy their JOY.

#2- Sin will deprive them of their FREEDOM.

#3- Because of sin opportunity will be denied.

#4- Discernment will be doomed.

#5- Sin will cast a future in doubt.

#6- Sin will cause HOPE to be diminished.

Read Verses 1-2

#1- Sooner or later sin will Destroy JOY.

A-   The idea is that, although it’s the worlds habit to party during certain occasions, YOU KNOW BETTER.

1-    This is a time of national PEACE & prosperity and they celebrate with singing dancing and feasting.

a- BUT in reality, it’s the calm before the storm.

-         Even during this time of war our nation:

·        Prospers in Peace.

·        BUT FOR HOW LONG???

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

2-    King Solomon tried to find joy apart from God (or

in sin) and it was not there.

See Ecclesiastes 2:1-11

Isaiah 22:12-13, And in that day the Lord God of hosts Called for weeping and for mourning, For baldness and for girding with sackcloth. But instead, joy and gladness, Slaying oxen and killing sheep, Eating meat and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

B-  Remember the footage of Katrina, Tsunami, areas of famine …

1-    Look into the faces of the people: a common condition NO JOY.

a-      WHY: their provision has been cut off.

Hosea 9:2, The threshing floor and the winepress Shall not feed them, And the new wine shall fail in her.

Nehemiah 8:10, Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

#2- A 2nd effect of sin we see here is: Sin will deprive you of your

      FREEDOM.

Read Verses 3-4

A- Who are the philosophers of the worldly wisdom of

              today.

1- TV Commercials probable exorcise more worldly

influence over man today than anything else.

a-    That soft, constant, persuasive evangelical (worldly) voice whispered in our ears:  beyond our notice,  to our detriment.

The first television commercial aired at 2:29 p.m. on July 1, 1941, when the Bulova Watch Company paid $9 to WNBT for a 10-second spot aired before a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. It simply displayed a Bulova watch over a map of the U.S., with a voiceover of the company's slogan "America runs on Bulova time!"

-         Some our children’s 1st words were TV

     commercials.

·        I’ve got more memorized than

     scripture:

Can’t believe I ate the whole thing, Used to hate it till I ate it, Ford has a better idea, Winston taste good like a cigarette should, McDonald’s can put good food in your stomach and change back in your pocket, GI Joe – GI Joe.

3-    My point: Where is the reality to these great promises of the world.

a-    Has anyone found freedom apart from God.

-         NO sin is a cruel master that promises great things BUT leads to bondage.

·        Sexual freedom, Financial freedom, Freedom from reality.

B-  Also notice the result of what happens when you sell out your Christian freedom in Christ to sin.

Hosea 9:4, They shall not offer wine offerings to the Lord, Nor shall their sacrifices be pleasing to Him. It shall be like bread of mourners to them; All who eat it shall be defiled. For their bread shall be for their own life; It shall not come into the house of the Lord.

#3- Because of sin opportunity will be denied.

Read Verses 5-6

A-   With every possession I have is the opportunity to use it for God’s glory and be blessed.

1- The idea here is: The possessions that God gave

Israel that could have been so productive to God’s will.

a-    They will be given over to the unproductive for uselessness.

2-    Egypt & Memphis = The world.

                                                                      a-      Nettles = a non-productive plant of any kind,

often in the context of other thorn-plants

                                                                      b-      Thorns = sin.

-         Illustration: How much do you give to the cable TV company VS God?

-         How much do you spend each month going out to dinner VS GFA.

·        Investments in the World = passing.

·        Investments in God’s Kingdom = perpetual.

Matthew 15:8, ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

Matthew 6:21, For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The opportunity denied?, 2 Samuel 12:8-9, I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your keeping, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more! Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight?

#4- Discernment will be doomed.

Read Verses 7-8

A- The ability to know and understand Good VS Evil.

1- A undiscerning person will invite evil, thinking it is

                       good, into their hearts.

a-    Because of sin the lines of right and wrong a blurred.

Proverbs 28:7, Whoever keeps the law is a discerning son, But a companion of gluttons shames his father.

Isaiah 5:20-21, Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, And prudent in their own sight!

3-    In the news: A Christian movie about a High School football coaches faith in God drew a PG rating because of religious content.

#5- Sin will cast a future in doubt.

Read Verses 10-16

A-     2 Things:

1-    In the political arena there are 2 types of people who hold office.

a-    The politician = He who sees to the next election.

b-    The statesman = He who sees to the next generation.

-         One willing to give up the future for today.

-         The other willing to give up today for the future.

Exodus 20:5, For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,

> Sin will: Destroy Joy,  deprive Freedom,  Deny Opportunity,

doom discernment,  cast future into doubt, AND diminish

   hope.

Hosea 9:17, My God will cast them away (disappear), Because they did not obey Him; And they shall be wanderers among the nations.

Isaiah 59:1-2, Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.

God bless America, land that I love
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with the light from above
From the mountains To the prairies,
To the ocean white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

A-The people sang this song last Tuesday, not so much as

they break God’s law but as they break God’s heart.

2 Chronicles 7:14, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
