Hosea 12

August 24, 2006

Intro: Row VS Wade,  Furman VS Georgia,  Regena VS Dudley &

          Stephens.

A- Three well known, landmark law cases that had an

               impact upon future generations.

#1- Row VS Wade =  the decision that caused the death of 44

      million unborn babies (to date).

Psalm 139:16, Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.

#2- Furman VS Georgia = Rendered the death penalty

unconstitutional because it was determined to be cruel and

      unusual punishment.

Exodus 21:12, “He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death.

#3- Regena VS Dudley & Stephens = The landmark legal case

that determined if it was legal for shipwrecked men to kill

      another and eat one another.

Ezekiel 5:10, Therefore fathers shall eat their sons in your midst, and sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments among you, and all of you who remain I will scatter to all the winds.

1- The case we have before us is LORD GOD of the

UNIVERSE VS Israel with Judah as an interested

                        party.

a- This case we’ll be looking at in Chapter 12

draws heavily from a previous case that set

                                precedent years before.

                                      - That would be the famous LORD GOD of the

                                       UNIVERSE VS Jacob.

                                                * Both cases that we (CCO, U.S.)

would do well to head, as, precedent

                                                 has been set.

Romans 15:4, For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

> What we need to see is that man has preformed religious practices throughout the bible BUT God has demanded that we take heed of His heart.

A- Again it comes down to man confusing efforts with

results thinking we are persuading God in our favor.

1- What I mean is: We’ll work hard at religion hoping God

will bless what we’re doing BUT never doing what He’ll

                       bless.

Psalm 51:16-17, For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.

a- Are we: Running a Religion VS Building a Bond

                                                 with our personal Savior.

Read Galatians 6:7-10

Israel = Running a religion, Building Baal.

> So here in Chapter 12 we’ll see God towards Israel:

#1- Criticizing their actions

#2- Counseling the accused

#3- Pronounces Consequences upon the accountable

A- All based upon the precedent set in that landmark case

of God VS Jacob. (P.S. God won, always does)

1- WHY JACOB: Although Israel is the offspring of

Abraham He is making a point by using Jacob as the

                       example.

a- If you recall Israel is divided in two:

                                      - The northern kingdom = Israel 10 tribes.

                                      - The southern kingdom = Judah & Benjamin.

                                                * BUT regardless where you dwell you

still have the nature of the father of the

                                                * The father of the 12 = Jacob.

#1- A Critique of Israel’s actions

Read Verses 1-3

A- It’s as if God has sat down 2 brothers Israel and Judah

             and is scolding them.

1- 1st brother Israel: The current worse of the 2.

Read Verse 1

a- The issue is idolatry as we know.

                                      - “Feed on the wind”

                                                * This is to feed on nothing to your

                                                 Spiritual detriment.

John 6:57-58, As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

b- To feed on anything or anyone else is to starve.

                                      - Worshipping the Lord VS rock concert.

                                      - Communion VS Friendship w/world.

                                      - Baptism VS Immersion in a job.

                                      - Married to the Lord VS marries to an idol

Jeremiah 2:26-28

2- And just as Jacob deceived Esau so Israel is

                       deceiving Judah.

Read Verse 2

Genesis 25:26, Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob. ...

a- Really the charge against Israel is feeding into

                                one’s perversity to stumble.

                                      - I could give 5 Spiritual sermons and those

here could go from a 5 to a 6 on the Spiritual

                                       scale.

                                      - I could give 5 Sinful sermons and those here

could go from a 6 to a 1 on the Spiritual

  scale.

                                                * You’ll stand before God for what

                                                 you’ve done (Judah V:2)

                                                * BUT I’ll also be held accountable for

what I’ve done to influence you (Israel

                                                 V:1)

                                                          - The responsibility of parents

Mark 9:42, “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.

Read Verse 3

          A- Two things:

#1- “by the heel” = Heel catcher = Jacob.

a- Kicking someone’s foot from behind. (causing

                                then to stumble)

#2- “And in his strength he struggled with God”.

a- Jacob was always trying to handle God the way

                                he handled everyone else.

                                      - trickery and manipulation

Genesis 28:18-22

#2- Next God counsels the accused.

Read Verses 4-8

          A- The idea:

1 John 1:9, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1- The end result of Jacob’s scheming was breaking,

                        humbling, and depending.

Read 4a

 Turn to Genesis 32:1-8,22-31

2- BUT not only was there a breaking, humbling, and

depending, there was also a returning.

Read 4b

Turn to Genesis 35:1-7,9-15

> The counsel from God to Israel/Judah

Read Verses 5-6

Exodus 34:5-9

> The response from Israel/Judah to God.

Read Verses 7-8

1- Canaanite = dishonest merchant (deceiver, heal

                                            catcher)

Revelation 3:17, Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—

#3- Lastly: God through the Prophet pronounces Consequences

       upon the accountable.

Read Verses 9-14

> SO

#1- Criticizing their actions

#2- Counseling the accused

#3- Pronounces Consequences upon the accountable

          A- What about us today?

1- Well is it religion or relationship?

a- How are we to know.

                                      - Tonight look in a mirror and determine are

you doing the minimum that reflects a

                                        relationship???

Romans 12:1-2

B- Why is this the minimum ( your question should be: why

not more, but I will tell you why not less)

#1- Since God sacrificed His only begotten son for us.

a- Since He died for us and gave us new life.

                                      - Ought we not live for Him?

#2- Since God is continually doing a work in us.

a- Not only do I have deliverance from Past sins, I

also have deliverance from present sins.

                                      - To sin, at will, is a slap at our Lord.

#3- Understand what God’s will is VS the devil’s will.

Read Verse 2

#4- Understand that those who enter in see the

beauty, those who don’t live in the ugliness.
