Murmuring (Baptist) Jews.

John 6 begins with the feeding of the 5000. The main topic was about getting enough bread to feed all of these people. We know the story, Jesus took the small loves and blessed them and provided enough bread for everyone to eat their fill and then collected 12 baskets full of fragments.
This miracle was not just about providing for the physical needs of the people. It was about setting up this discourse. Which is really a presentation of the gospel.
John 6:41 KJV
41 The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
The Jews (religious leaders) considered this claim blasphemy. They had made up their minds that Jesus was not form heaven.
John 6:42 KJV
42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
They knew Jesus’s parents, knew where He was raised. Knew what His family trade was.
I think they assumed that Joseph was Jesus’s biological father and they may have assumed that Jesus was born in Nazareth instead Bethlehem.
Or they knew the controversy surrounding His birth.
Either way, they thought they knew who Jesus was and in their minds he did not measure up to be the Messiah or God’s Son.
They were thinking “Who does He think He is?
John 6:43 KJV
43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
Jesus tells the Jews not to murmur among themselves. If you go back and read the account of the exodus from Egypt, you will clearly see that the Jews a murmuring problem.

MURMUR [Heb lûn (Ex. 15:24; 16:2, 7f.; 17:3; Nu. 14:2, 27, 29, 36; 16:11, 41 [MT 17:6]; 17:5 [MT 20]; Josh. 9:18), rāg̱an (Dt. 1:27; Ps. 106:25; Isa. 29:24);

To complain, murmur or grumble. In other words, they were baptist.
John 6:44 KJV
44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Calvinist proof text. They claim God only calls the elect.
Notice what Jesus says in:
John 12:32 KJV
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
Ezekiel 33:11 KJV
11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
Acts 17:30 KJV
30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
1 Timothy 2:4 KJV
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
2 Peter 3:9 KJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
These verses in no way teach universalism that all will be saved. What they do teach however is that it is God’s desire that all people would come to repentance.
John 3:16 KJV
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Now don’t go too far the wrong way on this. God and God alone does the saving. There is absolutely nothing man can in anyway contribute to his or her salvation. It is all of God.
God, through the convicting power of the Holy Spirit convict you of your sins.
God tells you you are a sinner and that you are going to spend eternity in hell.
God sent His precious Son to die on the cross and to shed His precious blood to make atonement for your sins.
God accepted Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross as atonement for your sins and mine and demonstrated that acceptance by raising Jesus from the grave.
God has provided everything necessary for salvation and is offering it as a free gift.
Ephesians 2:8 KJV
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:9 KJV
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:10 KJV
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
The question is will you accept it or reject it?
Leighton Flowers from Soteriology 101 uses this analogy: I can enable you to call me by giving you my phone number, but you still have to pick up the phone and dial.
God is giving you His phone number it is Acts 16:31. Will you make the call?
Romans 10:13 KJV
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
John 6:45 KJV
45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
Isaiah 54:13 KJV
13 And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.
Jeremiah 31:31-34.
John 6:46 KJV
46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
Only Jesus has seen God so only Jesus knows God and Know His ways.
John 6:47 KJV
47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
Notice that once you believe you have eternal life. It is not some you pick up later. You have eternal life right now.
The only condition for receiving eternal life is believing on Jesus.
Eternal means forever for all of eternity. Once you have it, it is permanent, you can not loose it.
John 6:48 KJV
48 I am that bread of life.
YHWH. Jesus is that eternal life. The only path to eternal life is through Jesus Christ.
John 14:6 KJV
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jesus is the bread of life.
John 6:49 KJV
49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
Only met a physical need. Temporal.
John 6:50 KJV
50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
Calling Himself bread is a metaphor.
He done the same thing speaking to the woman at the well in John chapter speaking of Himself as the water of life.
John 6:51 KJV
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
John 1:14 KJV
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Bread, flesh=life.
Eating here is a metaphor for accepting, believing. Taking Jesus in to your whole being.
Notice that Jesus’s flesh is a gift that he is giving.
Jesus is offering the bread of life, the Jews are rejecting His offer.
Notice who the bread is for.
It is not just for the Jews, it is not just for the elect as some claim it is for the world.
World =Kosmos in the Greek. it means all the people in the world/ universe.
John 6:52 KJV
52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
The Jews are either missing the analogy on purpose or because of judicial hardening.
or they are simply looking for an excuse not to believe in what Jesus is saying.
We tend to look at some famous pastor or teacher that is having some success and look for them to say something wrong so that we have a good excuse to right them off. it may not even be what they said, it may be our interpretation of what they said.
It seems to me christians are constantly tearing down other christians and we are doing in public in front of lost people. That is not God honoring. We have to quit shooting our own.
This exactly what the Jews were doing to Jesus. They were trying everything they could think of to discredit Jesus and they were doing it to protect their traditions.
I firmly believe that if Jesus showed up today doing miracles and teaching, we would do the exact same the things these Jewish religious were doing.
John 6:53 KJV
53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
John 1:14 KJV
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
This is not the Eucharist. It is not transubstantiation. It could be a type and shadow of the Lord’s Supper. But this is a metaphor. Jesus is standing right in front of the Jews, He is not saying come cut my throat, eat my flesh and drink my blood, it is a metaphor.
Back in event 74, Matthew 12. The Jews flat out rejected Jesus and committed the unpardonable sin. After that Jesus started speaking in parables. All of Matthew 13 is parables concerning the Kingdom of God.
Verily, verily = amen. amen. It means you need to listen. This is important.
Eating flesh and drinking blood. = metaphor. They do not understand that He will shed His blood on the cross as a sacrifice for their sins and ours.
The Bible is clear about consuming blood.
Genesis 9:4 KJV
4 But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
Leviticus 17:11 KJV
11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Leviticus 17:12 KJV
12 Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood.
Leviticus 17:13 KJV
13 And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust.
Leviticus 17:14 KJV
14 For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.
Deuteronomy 12:16 KJV
16 Only ye shall not eat the blood; ye shall pour it upon the earth as water.
Deuteronomy 12:23 KJV
23 Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh.
Deuteronomy 15:23 KJV
23 Only thou shalt not eat the blood thereof; thou shalt pour it upon the ground as water.
This immediately shut the Jews down. They do not get the metaphor.
John 6:54 KJV
54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
As Jesus has done in so many of His teachings, Is is using a physical example to teach a spiritual truth.
Eating and drinking as mentioned earlier, means here as totally accepting Jesus as Saviour. You are taking Him into your self and giving Him free reign in your life.
John 6:55 KJV
55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
Meat= food
food and drink =life and this case it is life eternal.
John 6:56 KJV
56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
Notice this is not temporal like the manna in the wilderness.
Once you eat and drink Jesus, you will forever dwell in Jesus.
John 6:57 KJV
57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
Jesus is saying that eternal life come from the Father through the Son.
John 6:58 KJV
58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
Do not trust in the temporal physical bread to save you. It is also a gift from God, but it will not save you.
Partake of Jesus and you will have eternal life.
John 6:59 KJV
59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
These passages clearly teach that Jesus is the only way to salvation. It is a free gift. You either accept it or reject it. Remember God’s phone number.
make sure you share that phone number with every person you can.
