Hosea 5

June 01, 2006

Intro: Las week we saw Israel (the northern kingdom) is on trial.

A- The charges brought against them are stated in Hosea

              4:1.

#1- “There is no truth (or faithfulness to one’s word)

#2- There is no mercy (or devotion to godlikeness)

#3- There is no knowledge of God in the land.

1- Could say the this of our nation, the same goes for

                       our society.

a- The logical response would be “are you judging

                                  me (us)”.

                                       - “No just look at the evidence”.

> In such a society:

#1- A moral depravity will prevail:

1- A person’s character will not count, his integrity will not

                       be and issue

#2- Another evidence of a society that has rejected God is

       ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION:

                   1- Hurricanes, Tsunamis, Earthquakes.

(Sign of the end times) Matthew 24:7, For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.

#3- Another evidence of a society that has rejected God is

       DEBASEMENT OF LEADERSHIP:

2 Timothy 4:3-4, For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

#4- Another evidence of a society that has rejected God is

       PERSONAL EMPTYNESS:

1- The excesses of the successful.

#5- The last evidence of a society that has rejected God is

       RUIN ON A NATIONSIDE SCALE:

1- This is a people who have gotten their own way and

“their own way” is a punishment itself.

a- A society who wants nothing to do with God will

                                become a Godless society.

                                      - It’s desire becomes it’s own punishment.

B- With this court setting in mind Chapter 5 is a

parenthetical statement by the Lord before Israel gives

              its defense.

The general theme of Chapter 5: “Maybe you don’t know God BUT HE knows you”

1- Kind of like a child hiding his face in the corner playing

                       hide and go seek.

a- He can’t see you BUT you can see him.

REMEMBER Psalm 139:1-6

A- If you recall this Psalm was progressive with the

foundation being GOD ALL KNOWING or (Omniscience)

1- Because God is(Omnipresent) He knows all.

2- Because God is (Omnipotent) He knows all.

3- Because God is all of these, we rejoice because He

                       is HOLY.

a- What would anyone else with such attributes

                                do with them???

- What is man’s reaction to these attributes??

- 1st reaction HIDE! (Adam & Eve)

- 2nd reaction RUN! (Jonah)

- 3rd reaction SUBMIT in holiness (every godly person who has ever

                                                        lived)

B- So Israel because of your un- submitted heart God

knows your WALK, WITNESS, WORSHIP, AND He knows

that you are WAIVERING, WARRING and WRESTLING.                       1- BUT know this; during all of this He is WAITING.

A- To start off REMEMBER why we are transparent before

              God JUDGEMENT.

1- Not the kind of JUDGEMENT where you die and go to

                       the bad place.

a- BUT an accurate judgment where you are at with

God and changes that will bring you back to

                                 where you need to be.

Romans 2:4, Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?

Acts 1:24, ...“You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, ...

                                      - What follows is God Spiritual evaluation of

                                        Israel. (Judah not much better)

#1- So 1st Israel’s walk.

Read Verses 1-3

A- Just as in the book of Revelation 2-3 the one who is held

accountable for the Spiritual state of the people are the

              Spiritual leaders.

Revelation 2:1, “To the angel of the church of (the 7 of them) write,...

1- “O house of the King” = Secular leadership.

Romans 13:1, Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

James 3:1, My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.

                   2- A Snare to “ Mixpah” = Watchtower  (South)

3- A net spread on Tabor = Mound  (North)

                             a- Internet = Web, net.

Read Verse 2 (See the intent of God)

B- Rebuke = Discipline OR Sever punishment designed to

                                restore one to proper behavior.

Proverbs 13:24, He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

 Read Verse 3

A- Ephraim was the choice land and tribe of the North.

1- The idea here that even the best has now fallen.

a- They are “defiled” = Used of an adulteress

#2- Next God evaluates Israel’s Witness.

A- They are dragging down their sister Judah.

1- Scripture and a fact of life:

Galatians 5:9, A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

a- Whatever sin you bring into your house it will

grow and multiply UNTILL = “THE BLOB”

                                      - Jesus recognized sin in the temple : HE

                                        THREW IT OUT.

                                      - It caused Moses to stumble.

                                      - AND look at Nehemiah

Read Nehemiah 13:23-31

CONSIDER THIS: Priests, Those of the house of kings, teachers,

Mark 9:42, “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.

2- Go through your homes and consider the sin you

may have brought in BECAUSE YOUR KIDS WILL.

#3- God then considers Israel’s WORSHIP.

Read Verses 6-7

A- This is anyone that wants to point out his righteousness

               by his:

1- Ownership of a bible, church attendance, religious

                        practice.

Read Matthew 7:21-23

2- Verse 7 = A failure to carry out the responsibilities of a

                                        natural or contractual relationship.

a- The last part of Verse 7 = Their religious

                                 practice will condemn them.

                                      - In my previous religious life, there was an

enough there to cause me guilt before God.

                                                * Every scripture I heard, every

                                                 communion, every prayer,

* every recognition of God BUT refusal

of a relationship WAS ANOTHER NAIL.

Romans 3:9, What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.

#4- What is the effect of Israel’s failure in these areas? They are

     wavering.

Read Verses 8-9

A- This is actually a warning to outsiders:

1- Those families or individuals you know who are

wavering in their lives because of ungodly practice.

a- The warning here is to Benjamin.

                                      - Watch as Assyria comes in and brings

                                        judgment upon Israel.

Ezekiel 5:17, So I will send against you famine and wild beasts, and they will bereave you. Pestilence and blood shall pass through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I, the Lord, have spoken.’ ”

b- God will bring the: Sword, terrorist, criminal, ...,

against a nation to get its attention and the

                                attention of surrounding nations.

#5- Because of their ungodly practice Israel is warring &

      wrestling.

Read Verses 10-12

A- And the idea is warring against God (See V:12 & 14).

Matthew 21:44, And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

#6- But through all of this, make no mistake, God is waiting.

Hosea 5:15, I will return again to My place Till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.”

Psalm 119:67, Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.

A- In the bible the term “going astray” = wondering off in

              ignorance.

1- A child, sheep, me in Home Depot.

Isaiah 53:6, All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

b- 2nd affliction brings us back to an understanding

                                of God’s Word.

                                      - This is an experiential understanding of the

interaction between God and man through

                                        the Word.

                                                * In Other words: Real life experiences.

                                                * Kind of how a parent learns to be a

                                                 parent.

ALL BASED UPON: You may not know Him BUT HE knows you.
