Hosea 11

August 3, 2006

Intro: IT was a concept 1st Established in Genesis, Revealed in the Gospels, and Expanded upon, through out, the Scriptures.

A- “The concept” = The love that God has for his people, is

as, that of a Father to his child.

1- Love 1st mentioned is the establishing of the concept:

Genesis 22:1-2, Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

2- We know that this was pointing toward that future event

that occurred on Mt. Moriah when another Father took

his Son His only Son whom He loved, and sacrificed

                       him.

a- The revelation in the Gospels tells us who this

Father Son combination or relation is.

Matthew 3:17, Mark 1:11, Luke 3:22,  “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

B- The expansion of this example of love in the scripture?

Such as the prodigal son: Luke 15:11-32

1- Pastor Mike isn’t the illustration of Hosea that of an

                       unfaithful wife.

a- YES, but there still not getting it.

                                      - If you’ve noticed since that illustration was

given in chapter 3 the theme has been the

                                       coming judgment.

                                                * In those chapter we’ve seen quite a

few comparisons between the state of

                                                 Israel and their impending judgment

and the U.S. and our coming

                                                 judgment.

2- “BUT” (a big conjunction) God never pronounces

                        judgment without leaving hope.

Read Revelation 20:11-15

> Hosea 11 = A Chapter of hope

a- SO Israel, U.S., unbeliever; are you going to

listen to the SOUNDS OF SATAN of THE VOICE

                                OF GOD.

                                      - Satan says you better go.

                                      - God says you need to come.

b- Because the Father sacrificed his only natural

son those who are or are to be adopted can

                                always come to their Father.

Galatians 4:1-7

> In the book of Deuteronomy Moses is addressing a new

generation of Jews about to enter into the promised land.

A- See just as the Jews were about to move forward Moses

              wanted them to look back.

1- 14 X’s in Deuteronomy Moses uses the term

                        “REMEMBER

a- WHY???,  Warren Wiersbe: Because a correct

understanding of God’s dealings in the past is the

best way to be certain of success in the future.

                                      - THE IDEA: Don’t look back and see your

sin, Look back and see what God has done

                                        about it.

> It’s what God encourages backsliding Israel to do now: Remember the back drop to Hosea, (“It’s not about you breaking my law it’s all about you breaking my heart”)

Verses 1-2

A- Remember those uncertain time in Genesis when so

much was happening in Jacob’s household.

1- His sons had a heart of murder for their brother

                       Joseph.

a- Then you had the ups and downs of his

                                 testimony.

                                      - Then there was that family reunion.

                                                * How at the close of the book God

showed the sense of it all:

Genesis 50:20, But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.

REMEMBER Ecclesiastes 7:8, The end of a thing is better than its beginning; The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

B- Even though God was a Father to Israel they were intent

               of godless living.

1- The idea of God as a Father to Israel (N. & S.) was

                       always foreign to them.

Isaiah 1:2-4, Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth! For the Lord has spoken: “I have nourished and brought up children, And they have rebelled against Me; The ox knows its owner And the donkey its master’s crib; But Israel does not know, My people do not consider.” Alas, sinful nation, A people laden with iniquity, A brood of evildoers, Children who are corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, They have provoked to anger The Holy One of Israel, They have turned away backward.

a- Jesus constantly referred to God in heaven as

HIS FATHER so as to make an impression into

                                 their hearts.

John 20:17, Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”

Matthew 6:9, In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

(Relate Verse 1 to 2)

2- SO as far as the message to the believer (Israel),

“How much does the Father love you?, He chose you”.

Read Deuteronomy 7:7-8

> BUT not only did He choose you,   He also cares for you:

Read Verses 3-4

A- There are 3 reasons why you would care for a child not

               of your natural family.

1- Because you Have to,   because your paid to,   or

                       because love compels you to.

a- Kelly: Gets paid to, no one is going to pay here

to care for her natural baby BUT I BET SHE

                                 STILL DOES.

Psalm 32:8-9, I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule, Which have no understanding, Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, Else they will not come near you.

                             b- God = A loving caring Father.

                             c- Israel = A spoiled, uncaring child.

Read Verses 5-7

A- The 1st 4 Verses dealt with God the Father of Israel and

their past, now we see the Father and Israel’s present

              (near future).

1- What do you do with a spoiled child who will not listen

who always goes after his own ways??

a- For his own protection you discipline him.

Proverbs 19:18, Chasten your son while there is hope, And do not set your heart on his destruction.

Proverbs 29:17, Correct your son, and he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul.

b- God has given room for repentance he now gives

                                 them a suitable punishment.

                                      - Next to Assyria Egypt will seem like

                                       Disneyland.

                                                * If Egypt = World

                                                * Assyria = The worst of the world

          B- Church take note:

Hosea 11:7, Though they call to the Most High, None at all exalt Him.

1- Lip service with no heart service.

Matthew 7:21-23

                             a- Also of note today:

Read Verses 6-7

REMEMBER: Genesis 12:3, I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

                                      - Listen up Lebanon, If you allow terrorists to

lob missiles into Israel your nation will be

                                       cursed.

                                                * Listen up United States, Don’t follow

                                                 Lebanon’s example (verbally)

> Still in the present day Read Verses 8-9

A- When ever there is still hope (as long as man draws

breath be can draw the breath of repentance) it’s God’s

nature to be longsuffering, forgiving, compassionate.

1- BUT even more so here se see He is FAITHFUL.

Genesis 12:1-2, Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.

a- BY law He has every right to: By His heart He

                                won’t

> Lastly Israel’s future.

Verses 10-12

A- Again: a declaration of judgment followed by a promise

                           of hope.

2 Peter 3:9, The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Matthew 23:37, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
