Int:

We worship God this morning by living in light of the great salvation we’ve received, as those who are exiles, who don’t fit into this world.

Text:

1 Peter 1:13–25 (ESV)

Point 1 Believers need to place their hope in their end-time salvation and live accordingly, holy and God-fearing.

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
“IN LIGHT of LAST WEEK’S TEXT…do this” = RESPONSE to GRACE.
PREPARE MIND--
He literally says, “Gird up the loins of your mind” ---Gird up is a hapox....tucking in robes to run/work
BE SOBER-MINDED
Sober minded has the sense of being free from mental or spiritual drunkenness, to be well-balanced or self-controlled (BDAG)
🐢🐢🐢
PREP MIND for....4 COMMANDS TODAY
(V13)...1st command: Set our hope- on the grace we’ll receive at Christ’s 2nd coming.
WEEK 1 - FOUNDATION of HOPE.
SET HOPE FULLY …NO SHARING!!!
HOPE on GRACE RECEIVED/BROUGHT TO YOU… = PASSIVE IDEA
Revelation = second coming of Christ.
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
OBEDIENT (HEAVENLY) CHILDREN
DON’T BE CONFORMED!
to form according to a pattern or mold (BDAG) to shape one’s behavior, to conform one’s life (Louw-Nida)
DON’T CONFORM...LUSTS of FORMER LIFE
NOT POURED INTO MOLD.
🐢🐢🐢
(V15) 2ND COMMAND: “BE HOLY”
for humans: “consecrated to God, holy, pure, reverent” (BDAG)
pertaining to being holy in the sense of superior moral qualities and possessing certain essentially divine qualities in contrast with what is human” (Louw-Nida)
HOLINESS = SEPARATENESS… “MARKED OFF”
To be holy is to separate oneself from what is evil. The injunction to holiness embraces all of life (“in all you do”). No sphere of life is outside God’s dominion.
as GOD is HOLY: (ERICKSON)
HIS UNIQUENESS
ABSOLUTE PURITY & GOODNESS…UNSTAINED BY EVIL WORLD.
HE IS QADOSH, QADOSH, QADOSH… (3X!)
COMMAND: HOLY IN ALL OUR CONDUCT (WAY/BEHAVIOR)
GOD = STANDARD
D.A. Carson says concerning this, “The expectation is that the gospel not only fits God’s people for the presence of the holy God but also powerfully transforms them.” (Commentary on the NT use of the OT, p. 1018)
---
ISRAEL SEPARATE from EGYPT…CANAAN...
CHURCH, BE SEPARATE from PAGAN CULTURE...
CAN’T BE A LIGHT if WE’RE IDENTICAL, LIVING IN DARKNESS

2 POINT: Believers live in light of the salvation they’ve received…
17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,
18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
1ST CLASS CONDITIONAL “SINCE” (NIV)...
(V17) 3rd command: “CONDUCT YOURSELF [with fear during the time of your exile]
HOLY in ALL CONDUCT (NOUN)…NOW CONDUCT (VERB)
***THEME of EXILE RETURNS
IN PASSAGE…CHANGE in LIFE = EXPECTED.
SAVED by GRACE…MANIFEST/EVIDENCE SALVATION through WORKS..
WORKS BEING JUDGED IMPARTIALLY…NO FAVORITES
Schreiner, “There is a kind of fear that does not contradict confidence. A confident driver also possesses a healthy fear of an accident that prevents him from doing anything foolish. A genuine fear of judgment hinders believers from giving in to libertinism (SINFUL SELF INDULGENCE)”
---------
(V18) —RANSOM
to free by paying a ransom, redeem” (BDAG) It has the idea of freeing or releasing a slave/captive
HOLISTIC/COMPLETED IDEA…& PASSIVE!!
HE PURCHASED US!
🐢🐢🐢
FUTILE (EMPTY) WAYS.
SAME GK WORD - CONDUCT (V15)
LIFE OUTSIDE OF CHRIST = VAIN/PURPOSELESS, ETC…BUT NO SO FOR THE BELIEVER!!
IF YOU COME TO CHRIST, FUTILE WAYS ARE A THING OF THE PAST!!
NEW CONDUCT —HOLINESS & REVERENTIAL FEAR…REPLACES OLD CONDUCT…FUTILE & SINFUL INHERITED FROM FOREFATHERS (NOT CHRIST!)
---
RANSOMED—NOT BY PERISHABLE MONEY (GOLD/SILVER)…BUT PRECIOUS BLOOD of CHRIST...

Gospel:

BLOOD of CHRIST = IMPERISHABLE, PRECIOUS…STILL FLOWS FROM CALVARY!
HIS BLOOD CAN PAY YOUR RANSOM TODAY!
----
GOD GAVE HIS BEST....SPOTLESS LAMB, CHRIST.
OT SACRIFICES…NOT “LUCKY” THE LAMB
GOD GIVES BEST…CAN WE NOT GIVE OURS?
🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢
20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you
21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
LAST WEEK: FATHER FOREKNEW US…NOW FOREKNEW CHRIST/CALVARY
CALVARY WASN’T PLAN B…it was really plan A.
MANIFEST, SPECIAL TIME
SAVING FAITH==ONLY THROUGH CHRIST
FAITH & HOPE IN GOD AS A RESULT.
***NOTE THEME OF HOPE.

Again, in light of their great salvation, believers are to love others.

22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
"purified”
PERFECT TENSE…NEW, ONGOING STATE of PURITY! PURIFIED @ SALVATION
(V22) 4TH COMMAND: LOVE
PURIFIED....LOVE ONE ANOTHER EARNESTLY
23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
24 for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
LOVE B.C. BORN AGAIN…GRACE ALL THROUGH EPISTLE!!
AGAIN, “IMPERISHABLE” - SEED of THE GOSPEL
EVERYTHING on EARTH = PERISHABLE...
FLESH/MANKIND - GRASS
GLORY of MANKIND - FLOWER.
THESE ALL DIE…BUT GOSPEL is ETERNAL EVEN in ROMAN PERSECUTION…NO ONE CAN STOP ITS SPREAD!!
TODAY: CAN’T CENSOR IT/ CAN’T CANCEL IT…CAN’T STOP IT.
IT’S BEEN GOOD NEWS FOR 2,000 YEARS AND IT ISN’T STOPPING NOW!

Big Idea:

As exiles, we shouldn’t blend in with the world around us, but we should stand out because of our hope, our lifestyle/conduct, and our love for others.
CAN’T COME TO CHRIST & REMAIN UNCHANGED...
-----6 minutes left--

Pointing to Christ:

Considering the 4 commands today:
1. Setting our hope (on grace)
2. Being holy
3. conducting ourselves with reverential fear
4. living with love...
(Q)-Could we have ever done this without Jesus?
BEFORE CHRIST:
HOPELESS
UNGODLY
INDIFFERENT/SHOULD BE TERRIFIED OF GOD
SELFISH
Now, we can set our hope on the future grace expressed at our final salvation…we can be holy…we can conduct ourselves with reverential fear during our exile, and we can love others....but all of this is the result of the foundational event of our second birth when we were ransomed from our sin by the imperishable blood of Christ, the spotless lamb…now in light of this salvation, we are to live as sojourners in this life!
-----3 minutes left-----

Application

Consider change in your life....
2 THINGS..
WHAT HAS CHRIST CHANGED IN YOU?
WHAT STILL NEEDS WORK?
HE’LL CONFORM US into the IMAGE of HIS SON…THROUGH H.S.
----
ENDING (FOR BELIEVERS only):
Say with me, “Because of Christ, I’m not the person, that I used to be”
But because of the work, of God’s Spirit within me, presently, I’m not the person, that I’m going to be.
**close in prayer
1, 2 Peter, Jude (6. Structure)
Kendall maintains that all the imperatives in the letter (1:13–5:11) flow from the introduction in 1:3–12. He then divides the text into the following sections: (1) 1:13–2:10 explains generally what it means to be the people of God; and here we have three subdivisions, focusing on the need for holiness (1:14–21), love (1:22–2:3), and election in Christ (2:4–10). (2) He argues that the next major section (2:11–4:11) is more specific than the first section, in that the author now explains what holiness, love, and election look like in everyday life. (3) Finally, 4:12–5:11 functions as a “climactic summary” of the letter’s contents, in which the author addresses the relationship with hostile unbelievers (4:12–19), community relationships (5:1–7), and God’s purpose for believers in their conflict (5:8–11). He summarizes the message of 1 Peter as “a movement from present suffering to future glory and a fellowship of love.
