Luke 10:38-42, Mary and Martha Serve and Worship

[Luke 10:38: Now it came to pass]. Trials come to pass.

Mary and Martha were always ready to receive Christ. Both were believers and loyal to Jesus but different.

Mary listened. This was good. Martha labored--being a good hostess.

How many times are we like Martha--too busy doing things for Jesus and not spending much time with Him.

[Luke 10:39: And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. John 12:3: Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment]. Mary anointed the Lord’s feet with fragrant oil, wiped his feet with her hair, and worshiped Him. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet--submission. Mary is an example. She listened to God’s Word. We need to love the Lord, to pray, and to read and meditate on His Word to stay close to the Lord. The feet of Jesus is a place of peace.

Luke 8:41: And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house.

We must take time to be holy.

[Philippians 4:6-9: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you]. Present your requests to God to be at peace.

[Luke 10:40: But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me]. Martha labored. She neglected Jesus. She was thinking about what she had to do. What she did was good, but she got distracted. Be like Martha [laboring for the Lord] but do not lose sight of worshiping Him.

Is sitting at the feet of Jesus the most important thing in my life? The more time we spend at the feet of Jesus, the easier it gets. We need to examine ourselves by keeping in His Word and by being led by the Spirit.

Mary was concerned about getting her soul fed.

[2 Timothy 2:15: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth]. We must have spiritual food.

[Luke 10:41: And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things]. Martha is anxious. I Peter 5:7: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Psalm 27:4: One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

JOY: Jesus first. Others second. Yourself last.

We do not reflect the light of Jesus if we do not sit at His feet.

Are you like Martha--overstressed and overworked?

We cannot do anything without Christ. We can do all things through Christ. Develop the right habits. Take time with the Lord.

[Luke 4:4: And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God]. We need spiritual food.

[John 6:27: Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed]. Be still and listen to Jesus through His Spirit and His Word. Do everything for the glory of God.
