Vs 14

John 1:14 And the Word (Jesus) became flesh (a man), and dwelt (tabernacle) among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus became human

  • Flesh – the physical nature of man as subject to emotions, suffering, prone to sin, hunger, etc…
    • John’s gospel does not even mention His birth in Bethlehem. Because Jesus is too big for Bethlehem. Out of eternity, the Word became flesh.

Isaiah 40:5 The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Other references: Romans 1:3; Galatians 4:4; Philippians 2:7; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 2:14; 1 John 1:1; 1 John 4:2; 2 John 1:7

Dwelt = abide (or live) in a tabernacle

  • Sidebar – Tabernacle

His Glory – John was an eyewitness to God’s glory through Jesus/

John testifies of seeing Jesus in His glorified state, per Jesus instructions.

Matt 17:1-9 1 Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!" 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. 7 And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, "Get up, and do not be afraid." 8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone. 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, "Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has risen from the dead."

Full of Grace and Truth – Grace is the forgiveness of sin and Truth is salvation through Jesus

Colossians 1:19 For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,

John 1:17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.

  • Grace – means blessing – The greatest blessing was the forgiveness of sin through the blood of Jesus

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.

Titus 3:7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life

Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

  • Truth– Salvation though belief and commitment to Jesus

John 8:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

John 18:37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
