Good morning, welcome to NHCC. Please open your Bible to Genesis 9.
Ending our time with Noah.
The falling of a giant.
- Consider what we know thus far of Noah.
Read Genesis 9:18-29- The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed. Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard. He drank of the wine and became drunk and lay uncovered in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brothers outside. Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.” He also said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant. May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.” After the flood Noah lived 350 years. All the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died.
Pray.
Explain the text.
Transition from the account of the flood to the table of nations.
Covenant made with all of creation to be carried out with the sons of Noah and their offspring.
Planted a vineyard and fell into drunkenness.
Uncovers himself in the tent.
Consider the shame of nakedness.
Something happens with Ham, the extent of which we cannot be sure.
What we do know- Ham leaves his father uncovered. Ham tells his brothers. Ham is nowhere mentioned in the covering of Noah.
Shem and Japheth do the opposite- notice the details given. They cover their father without ever seeing him in his shamefulness.
Ham broadcasts his father’s shame. Shem and Japheth cover it, removing their father’s shame.
Ham walks away with the news of what his father has done. Shem and Japheth approach Noah to help cover it.
Which are you?
What do you do with that which brings shame to people? Walk toward them to help? Or walk away to broadcast?
As a result, Ham’s youngest son Canaan is cursed by Noah. First words recorded by this biblical character.
A slave to his other two sons.
Japheth is blessed (Noah asks blessing upon Japheth) to dwell in the tent of Shem. Dwell in the safety and security of Shem.
Likely a prophetic and messianic word of people from all lineages being grafted into the line of Shem- dwelling safely in the safety and security of Christ Himself.
Good news, not just descendents of Japheth and Shem, but also of Canaan.
The God of Shem is blessed.
God brings about all that comes from Shem, and for that, He is praised.
Noah dies.
God is the main character.
This will be written of all of us one day.

1. Sin has taken root deep in the heart of mankind.

Reminded of the prevalence of sin. Have we been convinced?
If we could only be around like minded people...
The mirroring of Adam and the pre-sinful world.
Same profession.
Language of curse and blessing.
Shame of nakedness.
Sin results in familial strife.
Language is even similar.
Woman saw (ra’a) and Ham saw
Adam and Eve knew (yada) they were naked; Noah knew what Ham had done.
God- who told (nagad) you that you were naked; Ham told his brothers of Noah’s nakedness.
Nothing has changed.
Imagine reading this for the first time, hearing of the account of Noah for the first time.
Disobedience beyond the storm.
Noah was faithful through the most difficult of circumstances.
Fails when all is calm.
Soccer game- likely to give up a goal.
Aren’t we often the same? Putting down our armor.

2. The nakedness of man requires covering.

When in the story of Noah do we most identify with this biblical character?
Likely when we read of his sin and shame.
A theme that has shown up throughout these first 9 chapters.
Shem and Japheth covering the sin and shame of their father.
They are accomplishing what God did in the garden.
Where in this account of Noah do we find ourselves?
Evaluate your life. Which describes it? Sin and shame? Or the covering of God?
God’s covering of sin as a necessity.
It’s required of all of us. Noah could do nothing. He could not remove his sin, or his shame. He could not cover himself, but instead, in his shame uncovered himself.
We require faith in Christ alone.
John 1:29- The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Your sin may be taken away. Did you know this?
Psalm 51:7- Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Caked on dried mud. Blood. Even being outside in the frigid cold.
There is a beauty and comfort in being made clean. Don’t we desire this for our innermost being?
