The title of today’s message is

A Heart for the Lost

As we begin Chapter 9 we are about to see a transition is this letter from Paul to the Roman Church. The First 8 Chapters are spent discussing the doctrines of justification, sanctification, and glorification. When we get to Chapters 12-15 we will see Paul begin to address concerns he has with church life. But First he takes a moment to address God’s plan for the Gentiles and the Jews.
What I love about Paul is his ability to see questions before they come and address them. It is almost as if he is able to match the reader thought for thought and anticipate what questions might be running through their heads.
He starts this section out by addressing a question.

What about the Jews?

Let’s pick up in the scripture.........
Romans 9:1–5 ESV
1 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.
Paul begins with look folks I truly care about the lost.
I am not lying!
My Conscience bears witness to it.
I truly care!

1. When you begin to care about the lost it will change how you interact with the lost.

Romans 9:1 ESV
1 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit—
Romans 9:2–3 ESV
2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh.

2. Connect to the things of God is not the same as salvation through the Gospel.

Romans 9:3–5 ESV
3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

1 Adoption, 2. Glory, 3. Covenant, 4 Giving of the Law, 5. Worship, 6. Promises, 7. Ancestors, 8. Jewish Messiah

3. Why would we want anyone to miss out on what we have gained through receiving Christ.

Adoption

5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

Glory

Covenant

16 “This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”

Family and Future

Hebrews 12:1 ESV
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Land the plane......
