An Appointed Time

One of the main ideas we gain from prophecy is not when things will happen but the fact that there is an appointed time for all things. God has appointed a time for the rebellion and a time for the rebellion to end. We can take hope knowing that God will bring all rebellion to an end and Christ to rule and reign.

Introduction:
There is a time appointed for everything under heaven:
Ecclesiastes 3:7–8 ESV
7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
There is an old saying that I use all the time, “Don’t count your chickens before the hatch.” When we are sure things are going to work out just as expected, we begin living in that expectation. But very few things are 100% sure.
Story telling: Kim’s job when we started Reliant.
It’s an amazing thing that we have the sure word of prophecy in the Bible and know with 100% certainty is going to happen.
When you begin to trust the Word of God it changes your current reality.

“Walking by faith is letting God’s future mold our current reality.”

It’s the opposite of when you waiting to watch a football game that everyone else has already seen. Please don’t tell me what happens. Why because if you know the future it removes the thrill of the game.
When we are certain that Jesus wins the game it takes all the worry and anxiety out of our current circumstance.

“Jesus is Coming Back”
“So, keep your head up Jesus is coming back, Jesus is coming back No, don't you give up (hey) Jesus is coming back, Jesus is coming back And when the world gets complicated We're gonna keep on celebrating 'Cause we know (yeah, we know) Jesus is coming back, Jesus is coming back”
I have some great news for every Jesus follower in the room today. We win!!
Now the game will still play out and we might be down in the 4th quarter but no worries, We win!! No matter what we do we can’t change the outcome of the game. We will always be on the winning side.
Can you imagine calling up a bookie and saying, “ I want to bet on last weeks game because I just feel in my heart that they can win.” The bookie is going to think your crazy. No amount of hoping or worrying will change the outcome of a game that is over.
So what does a victorious Christian life look like?
Living in the confidence of Christ future victory, Today!
Build your individual stats that contribute to the win.
What we don’t know is how we contribute to the win. When a person knows they are going to win do they do better or worse? I think they do better because they have less pressure and more confidence. This is what sure prophecy brings in our lives as christians.
When I see someone who is down, I usually say, “Remember, Jesus is still on the throne.” This is my subtle way of saying, We won!!
Review
Last week, Pastor Mark brought to light the visitation of the pre-incarnate Christ to Daniel to tell him what would happen in the last 7 years before his return. Chapter 11 contains 45 verses of detailed material as Jesus lays out specifics of what is going to happen. For context I’m going to combine the Seventy weeks of Daniel 9 with the highlights of Daniel 11. If you are a Bible student I would suggest reading the book “Exploring the Book of Daniel” by John Phillips. He does a masterful job of laying out the 490 years of history covered in Daniel 11.

The Seventy Weeks of Daniel

Daniel receives a vision for the Jewish people totaling 490 years. The prophecy has a six-fold purpose to rid the world of sin.
Daniel 9:24 KJV 1900
Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Seventy 7-year periods = 490 years

Broken into 3 periods

Daniel 9:25 KJV 1900
Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
The time of the decree
The time of Messiah
The time of the end

The Appointed Time for Messiah

7 weeks = 49 years

Beginning with the decree of Artaxerxes in 445 B.C. (The book of Nehemiah)

62 weeks = 434 years unto Messiah

The “troubled times” is outlined in Daniel 11

The Hellenistic Period of Rebellion (Dan 11:2-20)

Mingling Jewish tradition with Greek culture producing an abomination to God.
You might call it a great falling away of the Jewish faith.

The Abomination of Desolation by Antiochus Epiphares in 168-167 b.c. (Dan 11:21-35)

Daniel 11:29–31 ESV
“At the time appointed he shall return and come into the south, but it shall not be this time as it was before. For ships of Kittim shall come against him, and he shall be afraid and withdraw, and shall turn back and be enraged and take action against the holy covenant. He shall turn back and pay attention to those who forsake the holy covenant. Forces from him shall appear and profane the temple and fortress, and shall take away the regular burnt offering. And they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.
Antiochus established worship to the Greek god of Jupiter and then claimed to be that god.
Defeated by the Maccabees in war
Determined by the Maschelim which were “the wise” bible scholars of the day.
Daniel 11:33–35 ESV
And the wise among the people shall make many understand, though for some days they shall stumble by sword and flame, by captivity and plunder. When they stumble, they shall receive a little help. And many shall join themselves to them with flattery, and some of the wise shall stumble, so that they may be refined, purified, and made white, until the time of the end, for it still awaits the appointed time.

The Coming of Messiah

Christ is born September 11, 4-3 b.c.

Daniel 9:26 KJV 1900
And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
Ending with the triumphal entry and Crucifixion of Christ in 30 A.D.
The final temple destruction in 70 A.D.

The Church is born

There is an undetermined amount of time until “the decreed end.”
This time is the church age.

The Appointed Time of the End

The last week of Daniel broken in 2 halves.

The Coming of Anti-Christ

Daniel 9:27 ESV
And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

Beginning with a treaty of peace with Israel.

Daniel 11:36–39 ESV
“And the king shall do as he wills. He shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak astonishing things against the God of gods. He shall prosper till the indignation is accomplished; for what is decreed shall be done. He shall pay no attention to the gods of his fathers, or to the one beloved by women. He shall not pay attention to any other god, for he shall magnify himself above all. He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these. A god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. He shall deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. Those who acknowledge him he shall load with honor. He shall make them rulers over many and shall divide the land for a price.
He is controlled by the Red Dragon which is Satan in Revelation 12 and 13.
He starts a new world religion.
He honors no gods of the past.
He rejects all goddesses including Mother Mary.
Honoring him is rewarded with riches as he divides the promised land for taxes.

Mid-point is mark by the broken peace treaty with Israel.

1 Thessalonians 5:3 ESV
3 While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
Daniel 11:40–45 ESV
“At the time of the end, the king of the south shall attack him, but the king of the north shall rush upon him like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen, and with many ships. And he shall come into countries and shall overflow and pass through. He shall come into the glorious land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites. He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and of silver, and all the precious things of Egypt, and the Libyans and the Cushites shall follow in his train. But news from the east and the north shall alarm him, and he shall go out with great fury to destroy and devote many to destruction. And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with none to help him.

Ending with the Battle of Armageddon

Revelation 16:12–16 ESV
The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east. And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. (“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

Christ and his bride return to defeat the Antichrist and his armies.

Revelation 19:11–21 ESV
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.” And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.
Thoughts to Consider:
How will Christ deal with your sin?
On the Cross at his first coming
On his horse at his second coming
Because we know that the prophecy is true, we can live in celebration today.
If the truth of Christ has set you free from the wrath to come, we should share it with the world.
Small Group Questions:
What role can you play in sharing the victory of Christ grave and the battle of Armageddon?
How does your life reflect the victory of Christ?
