Luke 4:33-44

Theme: Christ begins His Public Ministry
Key verse: v.1
44 verses; 1,021 words
Grade level: 4.8
Outline:
I. Christ and His Temptation. Vs. 1-15
II. Christ and His Testimony. Vs. 16-32
III. Christ and His Triumphs. Vs. 33-44
Now we get these VIEWS of victory that only Jesus has:

I. Jesus’ Victory Over Devils. vs.33-37

What the devils demanded. vs.33-34
33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,
Many of these devilish souls come to church to cause trouble not to worship. (John G. Butler)
Satan continually causes trouble where the Bible is preached and taught.
34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
Notice how they want God to leave them alone and admit they have nothing to do with Him.
Art thou come to destroy us? This devil (like most) accuse Christ of what they were trying to do.
What Jesus allowed. v.35
35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
Before this man was changed, evil was rebuked.
Before our nation and society will change for the good, evil must be rebuked.
We must separate from evil to defeat it.
What people thought. vs.36-37
36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

II. Jesus’ Victory Over Diseases. vs.38-41

A woman’s fever. vs.38-39
38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
The assault to their home.
Christ had just had a great performance in the synagogue, now He is confronted with a problem in the home.
Often where great victories are great defeats follow.
Adam gained a perfect wife; then lost his home and freedom.
Noah saved his family; then was found drunk.
David became king; then lost his testimony.
The access to their home.
39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
Other sicknesses. vs.40-41
The timing. V.40
40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
The troubles. V.41
41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
Christ did not want the testimony of devils.
Our churches need to remember this when trying to get some famous person with a questionable conversion experience to come to church to promote Christ.
The character of the person is important in giving testimony.

III. Jesus’ Victory Over Departure. vs.42-44

They wanted Him to stay. v.42
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
Before He preached, made decisions, or called disciples he got alone and prayed.
We must learn to get alone and pray as well.
They opposed Him leaving.
We must continue in the will of God even when people that love us oppose us.
He had to go. v.43
43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
For preachers we must remember we are called to preach before we are sent by the Lord.
Our place and people of service must never stand in the way of the reason we were sent there in the first place
His work was elsewhere. v.44
44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
