Message 5

Why is my heart so sad?

Ps 42
Me:

Depression

a. We all experience it to some degree
i. Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.
ii. Despair – Sadness – Misery – Hopelessness
iii. I call it the blues
iv. It hits me like a speeding locomotive

The pattern of depression

Self-protection

i. You are deeply hurt in some way.
ii. Perhaps somebody failed you; or maybe some plan that you had collapsed; or perhaps you failed yourself.
iii. It robs us of our enjoyment and peace
iv. We should face the hurt honestly – deal with – pray about it – commit to the Lord
v. But sometimes we just don’t have the strength
vi. We then pull into yourselves – retreat from reality
vii. You feel safe with yourself; you don’t feel safe with others.

Self-Pity

i. We feel sorry for ourselves
ii. We pull into ourselves and retreat from life.
iii. We get all wrapped up in our own problems and pains and forget that other people have problems and pains, too.

Self-Punishment

i. It’s your fault
ii. You become judge and jury and condemn yourself to a life of self-inflicted pain to atone for whatever wrongs you imagine you have done.
iii. It is here that Satan enters the picture
iv. He is the accuser
v. He likes to remind you of your sins, your mistakes, your failures, even your embarrassing moments.
vi. Each of these reminders only makes the wounds in your heart hurt that much more, and then you withdraw even deeper and isolate yourself from reality.

Self-Destruction

i. Satan is the destroyer
ii. He knows how to get a beachhead in your life
iii. He knows where you are the weakest
iv. But there is good news

Jesus

vi. There is no need for you to protect yourself and pity yourself and then punish yourself.
vii. Jesus Christ can come to you and meet the need and help you to defeat depression.
