The New Covenant
Opening Prayer
God promises a new covenant which means a New Relationship.
Jeremiah is written during a time a national mourning.
This promise is foundational to a couple of reasons
The days are coming… they have a promise of a future with God
New Covenant - covenant was the basis of their relationship with God.
Not like the old one - clearly they were unable to keep the terms of the original covenant
God’s people will have personal knowledge of the law.
Original covenant was written on stones and people were asked to internalize it.
New Covenant would be written “within them”.
God’s law (right and wrong) will be internalized from the start.
This is not justification for each person “finding their own truth.
We still base what we know on God’s written word.
Deeper personal understanding.
Inner ability to find and know the truth
This knowledge of the truth enables us to
personally obey God’s righteous law
personally enjoy His blessings.
“I will be their God and they will be my people”
Understood with a element of finality.
God’s people will have personal knowledge of God.
Faithful minority was the gateway for the majority.
Everything was done through the priesthood.
atonement for sin was done through the High Priest.
In the New Covenant = we still come together and sit under a pastor or teacher
But this is NOT THE ONLY WAY TO KNOW GOD OR HIS TRUTH.
“Rediscover the biblical meaning of authentic discipleship.”
This promise was fulfilled though Jesus
Final sacrifice
“I will be their God and they will be my people.”
There is now a finality in our relationship to God.
We can still damage the relationship (by sin) but we cannot sever it.
Jesus IS the final sacrifice for sin.
The Holy Spirit
We have this personal knowledge of sin
Personal knowledge = personal accountability
Forgiveness of Sins
