Review
Intro - Zechariah 1:1-6 - Return to me and I will return to you - main idea
1st vision - Zechariah 1:7-17 - Four horsemen patroling the world - reporting to angel of the Lord
All the world is at rest - bad thing
Angel asks YHWH, “how long?”
God answers the angel’s anguish with words of comfort
Zech 1:16, “I will return to Jerusalem with compassion; My house will be built in it…”
Historical Connection: Zechariah is writing during the same time as Haggai - both prophets are encouraging small group of Israelites who have returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the city and the Temple
Struggle to build, at time of Zech’s visions, just the foundation has been built
Haggai 2:9 “The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts...”
Main idea: God remembers His promises to return to Jerusalem where He will reside with His people
2nd Vision - Zechariah 1:18-21 - four horns, four craftsmen
Horns represent kings of the nations who have/will oppressed and scattered God’s people
connection back to Daniel 2 and 7 - four horns = four metals in statue = four beasts
Four craftsmen bring down the four horns - final craftsman is the suffering servant who defeats every weapon raised against His people in His kingdom - Isa 54
Main idea: God remembers His sovereign plan to bring low each and every king of every nation He raised up, culminating in the victory of His King
The Third Vision Pt 1
1.
Vision: Measuring Line -vs 1-5
A. The Measuring Man - vs 1-2
1 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, there was a man with a measuring cord in his hand. 2 So I said, “Where are you going?”
And he said to me, “To measure Jerusalem, to see how wide it is and how long it is.”
Lifted my eyes and saw - same intro to second vision
Man - Zech 1:8 - man among the myrtles
man = interpreting angel = angel of the Lord
Measuring cord
Zech 1:16 “Therefore, thus says the Lord, I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy; my house shall be built in it, declares the Lord of hosts, and the measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem.”
Ezekiel 40:3 “When he brought me there, behold, there was a man whose appearance was like bronze, with a linen cord and a measuring reed in his hand.
And he was standing in the gateway.”
Measuring man = interpreting angel: measures the dimensions of the final version of the Temple
This time in Zechariah he is going to measure the city
Correlation/connection between the Temple (where God dwells) and the City
Measurement of the final version of the city
God is calling Zechariah’s 1st hearers to build the Temple and City - their frustrating and seemingly meaningless work plays a role in the end
B. City Without Walls - vs 3-4
3 And behold, the angel who was speaking with me was going out, and another angel was coming out to meet him 4 and said to him, “Run, speak to that young man, saying, ‘Jerusalem will be inhabited without walls because of the multitude of men and cattle within it.
Another angel comes to meet Measuring Man - measuring man reporting to this other angel
Other angel commands MM to bring message to Zechariah
No walls - why?
Defenseless?
Ezekiel 38:10-11 “Thus says the Lord God: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme and say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages.
I will fall upon the quiet people who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having no bars or gates,’”
On that day - future day of the Lord - army will gather around the land without walls - Jerusalem
The armies are crushed by the Lord - remember the 4th craftsman!
Extremely Populated
Modern cities don’t have walls - too many people to fit within walls
Multitude of “men and cattle” - reference back to Deuteronomy 28:4, “Blessed shall be the offspring of your body and the produce of your ground and the offspring of your beast…”
This was a promised blessing for obedience: offspring of men and offspring of cattle will increase
Israel has been experiencing curse after curse for centuries because of their disobedience - God is promising to turn from cursing to blessing - why? Israel will become obedient.
How?
Also reference back to Ezekiel 36:11, “I will multiply on you man and beast; and they will multiply and be fruitful; and I will cause you to be inhabited as you were formerly and will treat you better than at the first.
Thus you will know that I am Yahweh.”
Ezek 36 is the prophecy of the New Covenant - Ezek 36:26 “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
Israel will covenant blessing of fruitfulness because God will give them a new covenant with the promise of a new heart of obedience, where His Spirit will dwell
Reference back to Isaiah 54:1-2, “1 Shout for joy, O barren woman, who has not given birth; Break forth into joyful shouting and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor; For more numerous are the sons of the desolate one Than the sons of the married woman,” says Yahweh. 2 “Enlarge the place of your tent; Stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, do not hold back; Lengthen your cords And strengthen your pegs.”
Make your tent bigger!
Don’t hold back!
Jerusalem will no longer be barren - no longer empty
follows right after prophecy of the Suffering Servant
Isaiah 54 already referenced in 1:19 with the Craftsman
This New Covenant blessing and reality of the city needing to be without a wall because of all its people and cattle is directly tied to the work of the Suffering Servant
Wall of Fire - vs 5
5 Indeed I,’ declares Yahweh, ‘will be a wall of fire around her, and I will be the glory in her midst.’”
Other angel says, “Indeed I, declares Yahweh…” - angel talking like THE Angel of the LORD
Talks as if he is YHWH
Talking like the Angel of the Lord we saw in Genesis 22 - Pre-incarnate Christ?
I will be, declares YHWH
I will be - same word pattern as I AM - declares I AM
Reference to Exodus 3 - I AM that I AM delivers His people to a covenant relationship with Himself - YWHW remembers!
I will be a wall of Fire - YHWH is Himself the protection around the city that is too vast for a physical wall
Reference back to Israel at the Red Sea - Pharoah’s army behind them, rushing toward them, Sea in front of them, Exodus 14:19, “Then the angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them.”
- YHWH remembers!
I will be the glory in her midst
Major reference back to…Glory leaving Jerusalem - Ezekiel 11:23, “The glory of Yahweh went up from the midst of the city and stood over the mountain which is east of the city” - YWHW will return!
Final Thoughts
How should have Zechariah’s first hearers responded to this promise of a visible, initmate, secure, close relationship with God?
Do we have access to this same relationship?
How?
If so, how should we believers respond?
