God's Covenant with David: 1 Kings 2:1-4 1 the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his
son, saying: 2 “I go the way of all the earth; be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. 3 And keep the charge of the
Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is
written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn; 4 that the Lord may fulfill His
word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons take heed to their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their
heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.
Solomon's words to the assembly: 1 Kings 8:57-61 57 May the Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers.
May
He not leave us nor forsake us, 58 that He may incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways, and to keep His
commandments and His statutes and His judgments, which He commanded our fathers.
59 And may these words of mine,
with which I have made supplication before the Lord, be near the Lord our God day and night, that He may maintain the
cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel, as each day may require, 60 that all the peoples of the earth may
know that the Lord is God; there is no other.
61 Let your heart therefore be loyal to the Lord our God, to walk in His
statutes and keep His commandments, as at this day
The Lord's Admonition to Solomon: 1 Kings 9:6-9 6 if you or your sons at all turn from following Me, and do not keep
My commandments and My statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I
will cut off Israel from the land which I have given them; and this house which I have consecrated for My name I will cast
out of My sight.
Israel will be a proverb and a byword among all peoples.
8 And as for this house, which is exalted,
everyone who passes by it will be astonished and will hiss, and say, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this
house?’
9 Then they will answer, ‘Because they forsook the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of
Egypt, and have embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore the Lord has brought all this
calamity on them
The Sins of Solomon:
Women: 1 Kings 11:1-3 1 But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of
the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites— 2 from the nations of whom the Lord had said to the
children of Israel, “You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you.
Surely they will turn away your hearts after
their gods.”
Solomon clung to these in love.
3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines;
and his wives turned away his heart
Idolatry: 1 Kings 11:4-8 4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his
heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David.
5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the
goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the
Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord, as did his father David.
7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the
abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon.

And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.
Solomon reigned 40 years and was buried in the City of David and Rehoboam reigned in his place(1 Kings 11:42-43)

Northern Kingdom - Israel (Ephraim)
King Jeroboam: (reigned 22 yrs)
• two calves of gold "here are your gods who brought you out of Egypt" (1 Kings12:28)
• made shrines on high places and priests from every class of people (1 Kings 12:31)
• did more evil than all who were before him, went and made for himself other gods and molded images to provoke
God to anger (1 Kings 14:9)
King Nadab - son of Jeroboam....reigned 2 yrs (1 Kings 15:25)
• he did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin by which he had made Israel sin
(1 Kings 15:26)
King Baasha - conspired and killed Nadab....reigned 24 yrs (1 Kings 15:33)
• He did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of Jeroboam, and in his sin by which he had made Israel
sin (1 Kings 15:34)
• Received judgment of Jeroboam.....dogs will eat those who die in the city and birds those who die in the field

King Elah - son of Baasha....reigned for two years (1 Kings 16:8)
• killed while drinking himself drunk in the house of his steward
• the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, by which they had sinned and by which they had made Israel sin, in
provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols.

King Zimri - commander of Elah's chariots/conspired and killed him....reigned for 7 days (1 Kings 16:15)
• he went into the citadel of the king’s house and burned the king’s house down upon himself with fire, and died
• because of the sins which he had committed in doing evil in the sight of the Lord, in walking in the way of Jeroboam,
and in his sin which he had committed to make Israel sin (1 Kings 16:19)
King Omri - commander of the army of Israel....reigned 12 years
• built the City of Samaria
• did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and did worse than all who were before him.
For he walked in all the ways of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin by which he had made Israel sin, provoking the Lord God of Israel to
anger with their idols (1 Kings 16:25-26)
King Ahab - son of Omri....reigned for 22 yrs (1 Kings 16:29)
• Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him.
31 And it came to pass, as
though it had been a trivial thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife
Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshiped him.
32 Then he
set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal, which he had built in Samaria.
33 And Ahab made a wooden image.
Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

• there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, because Jezebel his wife
stirred him up.
26 And he behaved very abominably in following idols, (1 Kings 21:25-26)
• was injured in battle and bled to death...as they washed the chariots, the dogs licked his blood (1 Kings 22:34-38)
King Ahaziah - son of Ahab....reigned for two years (1Kings 22:51)
• He did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother and in the way
of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin; 53 for he served Baal and worshiped him, and provoked the
Lord God of Israel to anger, according to all that his father had done (1Kings 22:52-53)
• Fell through the lattice of his upper room and sent messengers to inquire of Baal Zebub instead of God (2Kings 1:2)
• Elijah the prophet said that because of this he will not recover but die (2Kings 1:16)
• He had no son so Jehoram reigned in His place
King Jehoram (Joram) - another son of Ahab....reigned 12 years (2Kings 3:1)
• he did evil in the sight of the Lord, but not like his father and mother; for he put away the sacred pillar of Baal that
