STUDY NOTES
LUKE 6:46-49
BIBLE TEACHER: CLIFTON JONES
WHY CALL ME LORD?
INTRODUCTION
This is a very simple passage of scripture, a very meaningful passage of scripture
One that is easy to read and understand, you can read it in just a few seconds
It is not a passage that requires a Greek word study for better understanding
Jesus is speaking and His words are included in what is known as the “Sermon on the Mount”
You need to read that sermon and take a close look at your daily life, the sermon is about life
Jesus is teaching us how to live today, how to prepare for tomorrow, how to be ready for eternity
In these verses He is bringing His sermon to a conclusion (Matthew 5,6,7) (Mt.
7:24-27)
He closes His message with a warning of “Accountability,” we are accountable unto God
Throughout the Bible we are taught that we are accountable to God for what we have heard
The Bible teaches us to pay close attention when we know that God’s Word is being spoken
We are to read, study, and hear the Word of God for the purpose of learning how to live
We are to live according to the will of God, which is taught in the Word of God (Don’t neglect it)
We are to obey so that we can be blessed and be a blessing to others (Obey God’s Word daily)
In this passage Jesus shows us the importance of the daily obedient path of Godly living
To listen, to learn, and to live what we have learned is the answer to the storms of life
Everyone wants an answer to the storms of life, what can we do in our days of difficulty?
Jesus uses a house, a foundation, and a flood to teach us how important obedience to God is
THE HOUSE represents our daily life, our personal life, life at home and with family
Life at work, our career and job, our daily duties, our time of leisure and our hobbies
Life related to our church and our daily ministry as a Christian, the house represents our total life
Each-and every area of our daily life must be well built and soundly constructed
There are too many poorly constructed lives today, the world we are living in today reveals it
Everywhere you look you see lives that are falling apart because of the storms of life
In one area or the other, personal, home, family, job, they are falling apart in all areas of life
THE FOUNDATION represents what you do with the Word of God, obey, or disobey
There are only two possible foundations obedience or disobedience to the teachings of Jesus
Are you reading the Bible daily?
Are you learning and obeying what you are reading?
THE FLOOD represents the trials and temptations of life, the things that test our daily life
It is the times of trials and troubles that reveal how important God’s Word is to our daily life
OUR DAILY LIFE, we are all building a daily life, we must know how to build that life
Our world knows how to build everything else, but it fails to build a happy satisfied life
Internet can inform the world in a brief period-of time of anything that happens anywhere
The computer can answer questions in a moment of time concerning many issues of life
But no worldly system of man has the answer to the real problem of our life, a sinful nature
Our world today is an educated and informed world that continues to be troubled and shattered
Jesus gives us the answer to a troubled, shattered, and sin defeated life
Jesus compares the building of an earthly house with the building of an eternal life
Two old sayings fit this passage concerning our obedience to the Bible for daily living:
(1) Christian practice what you preach (2) Christian live what you have learned
How many church goers today don’t do either?
Many are not attempting to learn the Bible
In Matthew’s account one builder is called a “wise man” and the other a “foolish man” (7:24-27)
The “wise man” built his house on a rock, the “foolish man” built his house on the sand
Page 1 of 6
The foolish man was sincere, sinful, satisfied, until the storm came, and he realized he was stupid
How important is it to obey God’s Word?
Listen to Jesus--Luk 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
In verse 46 Jesus ask a direct question, each one of us must give a direct answer
Why would anyone call Jesus, “Lord” and not do what He says?
What is the point of doing that?
“Lord” is a title of respect, Jesus deserves glory, honor, respect, and obedience, He is “Lord”
Jesus speaks to those who claim to acknowledge allegiance to Jesus by saying “Lord, Lord”
The cry of double allegiance emphasizes the fact that as “Lord” He is to be the Master of our life
Jesus is showing that some want to claim they know Him but not commit to living for Him
They want to identify with Christ and Christianity without living a daily Christian life
Many say, “I don’t know what I would do without Him,” and live their daily life without Him
To truthfully call Jesus, “Lord, Lord” means that you have committed your life to Jesus
If you claim to be a Christian, you must be committed to follow Him as the “Lord” of your life
To give your life to Jesus for salvation is to commit your life to living the life He gives you
It does not matter how often you call his name in church, singing, praying, and proclaiming faith
Your daily life must reveal that He is the “LORD” of your life every day of your life
You must daily love the Lord and obey Him, Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
Saul had a good question for Jesus, Act 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou
have me to do?
And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou
must do.
(Read the Bible, it will tell you what you must do)
The day that Saul met Jesus he committed his life to obeying Jesus and living for his Lord
Saul later became known as the Apostle Paul who lived a daily life of faith, 2Ti 4:7 I have fought a good
fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: (Paul said, I have obeyed my Lord)
Paul experienced what Jesus is teaching in Luke 6 and he was crowned with righteousness,
2Ti 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge,
shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
(Loving Him
is obeying His commandments today waiting for the day of His return)
Saved and lost are accountable unto God for the Word of God and the teachings of Jesus
In previous days God spoke through the prophets, Heb 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers
manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, (Days of the Old Testament)
But Jesus is the last word from God, Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he
hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
That is why all Christians will stand before the “Judgment Seat of Christ,” 2Co 5:10 For we must all
appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body,
according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
(Accountability)
We must pay attention to what God has said through His Son, Heb 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the
more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
(Go in one
ear and out the other, for some it happens every Sunday)
If you are going to call Jesus “LORD,” then obey what He says because He is “Lord”
Jesus tells us of those who do not the things which I say?
Many people keep calling Him Lord and never put into practice what He says (2 Cor 5:17)
If you do not live your daily life according to the teaching of Jesus, you are not being truthful
You are not speaking the truth, you are being dishonest, you are playing the role of a hypocrite
