Love God: 1 John 3:1-10

1 John 3:1–10 NASB95
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him. Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.
The first thing we usually point out is the repeating words thus far in the text, however, this week we see quite a notable term being added to the text. The concept of the “child” or “children of God”. John isn’t the only one to use the term. Paul used the term in Romans
Romans 8:16 NASB95
The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,
and Matthew in the Sermon on the mount:
Matthew 5:9 NASB95
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
John also used the term in his Gospel:
John 1:12–13 NASB95
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
This brings us to the first verse for tonight’s study:
1 John 3:1-2 (NASB95)
1 John 3:1–2 NASB95
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.
The Father bestowed the love to us
The “see” command is drawing the reader back to who they are in Christ
The title is tied to the adoption/grafting in the vine.
The parallel between the father and the world
Children of God also pulls more from eschatological imagery
1 John 3:3 NASB95
And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
Even if the effort is minimal this is an argument for synergistic salvation
1 John 3:4 NASB95
Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
Pretty self explanatory
1 John 3:5 NASB95
You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.
Isaiah 43:25 NASB95
“I, even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake, And I will not remember your sins.
Mark 2:7 NASB95
“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?”
1 John 3:6 NASB95
No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.
Returning back to the idea that those whom believe themselves to be save may not have ever been saved to begin with.
1 John 3:7 NASB95
Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous;
This is a return to the command to know truth and test spirits
1 John 3:8–10 NASB95
the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning.
Again, the truly saved cannot practice sin and be saved
Matthew 12:31–37 CSB
31 Therefore, I tell you, people will be forgiven every sin and blasphemy, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the one to come. 33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit will be good, or make the tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. 35 A good person produces good things from his storeroom of good, and an evil person produces evil things from his storeroom of evil. 36 I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Galatians 5:16 CSB
16 I say, then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh.
