Search for significance in the church Matthew 16:13-20 John 16:22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. Isaiah 41:10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Main Point: Nothing will stop Jesus from building His Church Matthew 16:13 he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" (Remembering Scott Wilson) Matthew 16:14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 1. The Great Question Matthew 16:15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Romans 10:9 if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 2. The Great Answer Matthew 16:16 Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 1 John 4:15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. John 11:27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world." Matthew 16:17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 3. The Great Promise Matthew 16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. A. I will build my church B. It will never be defeated Matthew 16:18 and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (ESV) Matthew 16:18 and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. (NIV) Matthew 16:22, 23 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns." C. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom Matthew 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." 1 Peter 5:3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. (church staff) (Baptisms/Child Dedication) (VBS) (Block Party) (Youth Group Praise Team) 1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1
