# 97 Jesus walks on water.
# 97 Jesus walks on water.
22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
Why?
14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.
Maybe even the disciples instigated this or got caught up in it.
It was not the right time and it was not for the right reasons.
23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
Jesus needed some quiet time. He needed time to reconnect with the Father.
If Jesus needed time alone with God, how much more do we?
24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
The disciples had got caught in a storm.
Much is said about the terrain that causes these storms to happen.
I think this is a divinely caused storm for a divine purpose.
When you are serving the Lord there are going to be storms. It is not going to be an easy cake walk. There will be trials and troubles.
Many people walk away from serving God because it is too hard. If there are not any storms in your ministry, then maybe you are not doing something right.
Warren Wiersbe pointed out that storms happen for two reasons, 1. for punishment and 2 for growth.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
Not just a normal sea but an angry sea. When there is wind there are waves. from Johns gospel it is estimated that Jesus walked about 3 1/2 miles.
48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
Notice that they could not see Jesus, but He could see them.
Jesus could have stopped that storm and let them row to the other side with ease even though He was not there.
But they would not have witnessed His power over creation.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
They were already in a terrible storm, they were already afraid and now there comes some kind of ghost looking thing walking on the water. It had to be a ghost or spirit because men can not walk on water.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.
3 And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:
Some claim it is the same use as the Tetragrammaton.
Ex 3:14, Is 41:4, 13; 43:10; 51:12.
Hauerwas says “ this is the I am of Ps 77:19. Zondervan Exegetical Commentary.
The incident with Peter was not included in Mark or John’s account of this same story. John and Matthew were eyewitnesses.
Since Mark is believed to have been writing Peter’s account, that may be the reason that this story was not included in Mark.
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
The impulsive Peter. He may have regretted that statement after he said it.
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
Once Jesus said Come, Peter did not have a choice.
He actually got out of the boat and walked on the water. The Bible does not say how long or how far but Peter did walk on the water. Jesus and Peter were the only two men in history to walk on the water.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
As long as Peter trusted Jesus, he walked on water. When fear set in and Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and started sinking.
When we are in the middle of the storm we need to keep our eyes on Jesus.
Peter did fear and show a lack of faith. But, as soon as he knew he was in trouble, He called on Jesus.
This is a picture of salvation. When you realize that you are a sinner and will spend eternity hell, you can call on Jesus and He will save you.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
Jesus saved Peter. Jesus confronted Peter’s lack of faith.
We do have to remember that only Peter got out of the boat.
32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
Jesus and Peter got in the boat and immediately the sea went calm.
33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Notice now they say He is the Son of God.
notice the difference in Mat 8:23-27.
27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
Because of the storm and the fear and then seeing what happened with Jesus and Peter, and then the sea going calm, the disciples came to a greater understanding of who and what Jesus is.
WE may have to go through a storm so that we to will see and understand who Jesus is.
When you are in the storm, keep your eyes on Jesus or you to will start to sink.
21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
Storms are coming. All of us are either going into a storm, in the middle of the storm or coming out of a storm, we have to keep our eyes on Jesus and trust Him to get us through the storm.
When you realize that you are in trouble ands that you cannot save yourself, call on Jesus to save you and He will save you.
