Intro

Being Sick
Doctor diagnoses, gives prescription.
Pharmacy fills prescription, gives you medication.
Medication is useful, but only when you actually take it.
This passage shows us that there is a sickness we all have, and there is a remedy for that sickness. There are multiple steps along the way to that remedy, and they must all be followed. However, we have to be careful that we don’t get lost along the way, and keep the remedy itself in our minds as what we truly desire.

Many Signs Pointing To Truth and Life

There are many signs that point the people of God to truth and life.
John 5:30–31 ESV
“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true.
John The Baptist
S John 5:32-35
John 5:32–35 ESV
There is another who bears witness about me, and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Not that the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
I the Doctor. “wow, I love the way that you diagnosed me. That was amazing. I have no plans to get this prescription filled, but I can’t wait to come back next week and hear that diagnosis again.”
A Faithful preachers. We tend to put to much value in them themselves
The Father
S John 5:36-38
John 5:36–38 ESV
But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.
I the Pharmacy “Wow, you have given me exactly what I need to be better. It was so easy for you! It could not possibly be any clearer for me what I must do now to get better. I have no plans to take this medicine out of the bag you gave me, but I will definitely be back next week after I get my diagnosis again.”
A: The prophecies about the Christ. We can put too much value in them themselves.
The Scriptures
S John 5:39-40
John 5:39–40 ESV
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
I the Medication “This medication is awesome! Isn’t it wild that if I just take this medicine, I will be cured of my lethal disease? Imagine. How cool. I definitely won’t do more than just stare at it, but how cool that it exists.”
A: The Scriptures have been handed down to us. We can even put to much value in them themselves.

Jesus the Only Direct Source of Truth and Life

John 5:41–47 ESV
I do not receive glory from people. But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
S- All of these sources have one purpose: to point you to Christ, that you may have life. All of these things are pointless if they do not point you to Christ
