"John invited his mother over for dinner. During the course of the meal, his mother couldn't help but noticing how beautiful John's room-mate was. She had long been suspicious of a relationship between John and his room-mate, and this had only made her more curious. Over the course of the evening, while watching the two interact, she started to wonder if there was more between John and his room-mate than met the eye. Reading his mom's thoughts, John volunteered, "I know what you must be thinking, but I assure you Julie and I are just room-mates." About a week later, Julie came to John saying, "Ever since your mother came to dinner, I've been unable to find the silver gravy WOODEN SPOON. You don't suppose she took it, do you?" John said, "Well, I doubt it, but I'll write her a letter just to be sure." So he sat down and wrote: "Dear Mother, I'm not saying that you 'did' take the gravy spoon from my house, I'm not saying that you 'did not' take the gravy spoon but the fact remains that one has been missing ever since you were here for dinner." Several days later, John received a letter from his mother which read: "Dear Son, I'm not saying that you 'do' sleep with Julie, and I'm not saying that you 'do not' sleep with Julie. But the fact remains that if she was sleeping in her own bed, she would have found the gravy spoon by now. Love, Mom." Lesson of the day ...Never Lie to Your Mother" & DON'T SLEEP WITH YOUR ROOMATE!
- Marriage is when a man and woman become as one. The trouble starts when they try to decide which one
- Marriage is not a word. It is a sentence (a life sentence!)
- Marriage is an institution in which a man loses his Bachelor's Degree and the woman gets her Masters
Married life is full of excitement and frustration :
- In the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens.
- In the second year, the woman speaks and the man listens.
- In the third year, they BOTH speak and the NEIGHBOURS listen.
I think men who have a pierced ear are better prepared for marriage. They've experienced pain and bought jeweler.
Myths of marriage:
1. It is a solution, problem 1 Corinthians 7:28
-- temporary bandage but not permeant cure
-- marriage is not Jesus. Jesus can be in marriage
-- God saves individuals not marriages
2. It is not for everyone
Heb.13:4 it's Honorable
Matthew 19:10 Why get married?
1 Cor.7:7 I wish for all to be like me
Mariam, Elijah, Elisha, Jeremiah, Daniel, John Baptist, Lazarus, Mary, Martha, JESUS
3. It will not make you whole but reveal holes
-- It will complete me, compliment
-- it will not satisfy but magnify
-- it's not magic but mirror
4. It's a contract, covenant (Mal.2:14)
A contract is basically an agreement between two people for the purpose of protecting their rights, limiting their responsibilities and safeguarding their interests
A covenant is an unconditional surrendering and laying down of your life and your rights while increasing your responsibilities and safeguarding the interests of your covenant mate
Contract is part on the line (77 years of marriage..99, 96, 1940)
Contract has expiration
Contract is ink (first sexual intercourse there is blood)
Go to Bed with Rachel, Wake up with Leah
Genesis 29:16-17, 21-26
Son: Is it true? Dad, I heard that in ancient China, a man doesn't know his wife until he marries. Father: That happens everywhere, son, EVERYWHERE!
High expectations with low preparation equals great disappointment
Keep your expectation on the level of your preparation
Bring your preparation to the level of expectation
Lower your expectation to the level of preparation
Goal is not to be pessimist but to decrease disappointment
You fall in love with Rachel but are you prepared to live with Leah?
Rachel has twin sister, who is not that pretty
// conflict resolve
// money habits
// outgoing vs staying home
// quality time vs serving
// food habits
Marriage has 5 Levels:
1. Fascination
2. Irritation
3. Toleration
4. Appreciation
5. Celebration
Marriage requires a man to prepare 4 types of "RINGS" :
- The Engagement Ring
- The Wedding Ring
- The Suffer-Ring
- The Endue-Ring
Preparation is about growth that should not stop with getting married.
"It's one thing to make mistake not being prepared for it, is not being prepared in it"
When you are in love with Rachel, get to know Leah
Good looking good without character is pig
Secret is being Rachel without Leah
Jacob got who he was ---
You need an encounter with God
