Review
If I were being “kind” to you, would you know it?
If I were being “mean” to you, would you know it?
If you were being “kind” to God, would He know it?
If you were being “mean” to God, would He know it?
1 Remind them to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, 2 to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men. 3 For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.
That’s what sin is.
It is something you do to be mean to God.
In fact, the Bible says, “Whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4b)
What is an “enemy”?
An enemy is someone who wants to hurt you.
So, God says that the whole world works hard to do bad things against God.
And, He knows it.
What do you think He should do about it?
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
13 ὁ δὲ θεὸς τῆς ἐλπίδος πληρώσαι ὑμᾶς πάσης χαρᾶς καὶ εἰρήνης ἐν τῷ πιστεύειν, εἰς τὸ περισσεύειν ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐλπίδι ἐν δυνάμει πνεύματος ἁγίου.
1 Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves.
Why?
3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.”
7 Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God.
8 For I say that Christ has become a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the fathers, 9 and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy; as it is written, “Therefore I will give praise to You among the Gentiles, And I will sing to Your name.” 10 Again he says, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.” 11 And again, “Praise the Lord all you Gentiles, And let all the peoples praise Him.” 12 Again Isaiah says, “There shall come the root of Jesse, And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles, In Him shall the Gentiles hope.”
Context:
The Bible says that the Messiah is someone who is chosen by God to take away the sins of the nation of Israel.
He would be THEIR Messiah.
But, that is not all.
The Bible also says that the Messiah would also take away the sins of the Gentiles.
What are Gentiles?
They are people who are not born in the nation of Israel.
They are people who don’t have the promise by God for the Messiah to come from them.
5 and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”
The Gentiles didn’t have God give them His Law, or deliver them from Egypt, or promise that He would save them from their sins.
That promise was given to the Jews, to Israel.
BUT:
Even though the promise was not given to them, God did actually give them the promises that He promised Israel.
So, that means that God gave good gifts to the Gentiles because of His mercy, and not because He owed it to them.
That is why Paul wrote:
9 and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy; as it is written, “Therefore I will give praise to You among the Gentiles, And I will sing to Your name.”
10 Again he says, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.” 11 And again, “Praise the Lord all you Gentiles, And let all the peoples praise Him.”
12 Again Isaiah says, “There shall come the root of Jesse, And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles, In Him shall the Gentiles hope.”
Paul is writing to a church that has mostly Gentiles in it.
He is also writing to them so that they know how to live in a humble way and not be proud that God saved them.
That is why Paul wrote what He wrote in our passage tonight.
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
“…may the God of hope...” = the God who is composed of hope. That is, He can be hoped in because He worthy of hoping in Him. He is the God of hope!
Romans 3. Among the Weak and the Strong (14:1–15:13)
who is the source of all hope
“…fill you with...” = make you like a glass - make you full of...
“…joy...” = deep pleasure in God.
“…peace...” = unshakeable confident in God.
“…in believing...” = the cause of the joy and peace!
“…so that you will abound in hope...” = we are back to “hope” again.
“…by the power of the Holy Spirit...” = this is the work of the Holy Spirit, not the work of a person.
Conclusion
The only way to have this hope is to know God.
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
The only way to know God is to know His Son.
The only way to know His Son is to read His Word, the Bible.
