Introduction:
· What does the church do when sin is brought to light?
LET’S LOOK AT THE DANGER SIN POSES, HOW TO DEAL WITH SIN IN THE CHURCH, AND HOW TO DEAL WITH SIN IN THE WORLD.

ii. Like Yeast: Tolerating sin allows it to spread throughout the church (vs. 6)
1. Yeast spreads so that it has an effect on the whole batch of dough
2. EXAMPLE: Tolerating bullying/abuse creates culture in the whole church

1. Yet, Paul’s bigger concern: Like yeast, this sin puffs up the church (vs. 2)

ii. A more serious problem: When the church downplays the severity of sin
1. Some feel this is hard on us – struggle with sin, give in, guilt, shame:
2. APPLICATION: not the person who struggles with sin, but boasts!
NOW, THE QUESTION BECOMES – HOW DO WE AS A CHURCH RESPOND?

i. Jesus is the true & greater Passover Lamb (vv. 7-8)
1. Passover: God frees Israel from slavery; the FOUB = cleansing from sin
2. Since Christ is the reality, we are to Be who we are! (vs. 7b)
ii. We Celebrate the Feast by “being who we are!” (vs. 8)
1. We “celebrate” our salvation by cleansing even the root of sin
2. EXAMPLE: What are the roots of sin in our lives? Lust? Greed? Idolatry?

1. Our position: The Church is to exercise discipline consistent w. Matt. 18

1. We are to recognize our role in the church and in the world (different!)
2. It would be impossible to avoid sin in the world so we may associate with non believers in the world
ii. Trusting God’s sovereign judgment
1. It is God’s role – not ours – to judge the world… and he will, perfectly
2. Therefore, we rest in his sovereign judgment: whatever laws are passed…
