Written in reflection of Babylonian captivity
Went from the mountaintop to the valley.
Homesickness and Helpless
Despairing and Disturbed
Since Babylon captured Israel and took them away in captivity, it would be construed that Israel’s God was weak and a deserter, not able to protect His own people.

Where is your God when you need Him most?
The Solution: Hope
He is here, even if I can’t see Him.
Hope in essence is waiting for God to act. There is a spirit of expectancy (faith).
Instead of focusing on the problem, focus on the solution - God.
We cry out to God and God will find us in the midst of our pain
A sacrifice of praise - tears and knees - a cry for closeness to God. When can I see Your face?
I Shall praise Him again! Hope in the coming restoration of all things

My soul is in despair within me
Despair – crumbling hill or mountain; to stoop, bow down, to sink low.
Mount Mizar is unknown, but the land of the Jordan is the region beyond the Jordan to the north and east, where Mount Hermon is.

Mizar means little hill, so is probably a lesser mountain in the Hermon range.
This area is pretty far from Jerusalem and if a captive were headed east in the direction of Babylon, this is the last point from which he might glimpse the familiar mountains of his homeland to the south.

I feel like I’m seeing God from afar.
Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls
Metaphorically “the deep” is the opposite of heaven, and a symbol of chaos.
As if being taken captive wasn’t enough, he ties in all the overwhelming trials that he is feeling as a result of his deportation.
He’s feeling like the rock at the bottom of the waterfall.

Then trusting God to act for our good and for His glory, in His timing.
This is why we want to be a beacon of truth.

Holy vs. Ungodly nations - perfect, pure, and separate from
Ungodly nation - not kind, not benevolent, unmerciful. Have you been beat down?
Truth vs. Deceit
Deceit – intentional misleading of someone else through distorting or withholding the truth. Have you been lied to?
Truth also means faithfulness and God’s words and actions are characterized by this term.
Also carries the connotation of blessing and deliverance.
Just vs. Unjust – He will right all wrongs. He will vindicate us.
Injustice – deviating from the right way of doing things. Have you been treated wrongly?

Light is the manifestation of His presence. Shekinah glory.

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Exceeding Joy: A happy state of affairs compared to a previous state of suffering
A time of celebration at the reality of the deliverance of God from one’s enemies.
A remembering again of festival worship in Jerusalem.

Hope says, “You are my God!” in anticipation of the fulfilment of His promises of deliverance (help).
Hope remembers God’s songs in the night.

Hope longs for the “praise” of God for the acts of salvation.
Faith speaks truth into impossible situations and sets us free from fear, worry, and doubt.

Once again, this is where music plays such a pivotal role. This whole Psalm was written for the choir to sing.
As we bask in the glory of God’s presence, it marinates us and like Moses we begin to radiate that glory
(My Countenance) That Beacon of Truth leads us into the throne room of God Almighty and allows to glow.

The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.’
It’s that glow of God’s glory even as it fades away that leads us to accept, hold on to, and proclaim the truth of Who God is, the great things that He has done, knowing that everything He does is for our good and His glory, regardless of the circumstances that surround us.
