4 After looking up the disciples, we stayed there seven days; and they kept telling Paul through the Spirit not to set foot in Jerusalem.
8 On the next day we left and came to Caesarea, and entering the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we stayed with him.
9 Now this man had four virgin daughters who were prophetesses.
10 As we were staying there for some days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.
11 And coming to us, he took Paul’s belt and bound his own feet and hands, and said, “This is what the Holy Spirit says: ‘In this way the Jews at Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’ ”
12 When we had heard this, we as well as the local residents began begging him not to go up to Jerusalem.
Why was Paul being Stubborn?
15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,
But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.
When Peter and John were warned by the Jewish Council to stop preaching in the name of Jesus their answer was.
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
When Jesus told Peter what was going to happen to him. Specifically that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer.
Peter said God forbid it.
23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
So, when everyone was warning Paul not to go to Jerusalem, Paul is faced with a choice to listen to them, or listen to the Holy Spirit.
In Acts 19 it says that Paul was purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem.
Last week,
22 “And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there,
23 except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.
So when everyone is telling Paul not to go, and he is not heeding their warning, we have to remember, Paul’s calling.
While Paul was persecuting the Christians, the Lord said to Ananias to go and lay hands on Paul and heal his sight.
Ananias didn’t know that Paul encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus.
15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel;
16 for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name’s sake.”
Everyone warning Paul thought they were giving Paul good advise.
What they were doing was fulfilling prophecy.
Paul wasn’t being stubborn, he was being obedient.
The Holy Spirit was telling everyone around Paul that if he goes to Jerusalem, he will suffer.
BUT, the Holy Spirit was telling Paul; Go to Jerusalem and you will suffer.
HONEST QUESTION!!!
If you give someone advise, and they don’t take it, do you get angry?
Or
If you give someone advise with a warning and you are proven right, are you an, “I told you so” person?
We will look at Paul’s arrest in Jerusalem next week, but I wonder how many people were, “I told him!”
This illustrates the kind of cultural shift Christ ushered in and why it caused so much controversy.
Three basic cultures:
Theonomous
Heteronous
Autonomous
Theonomous: Right and wrong are dictated by God.
Heteronomous: dictated by others (a few at the top)
Autonomous: dictated by self.
Jews and early Christians were both a Theonomous culture.
They both believed they were bound to live obedient to God.
But who dictated what God’s law was?
Who was his spokesperson?
In the Garden it was God himself.
Then the fathers:
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Moses
Judges
Kings - Prophets advised the Kings
Priests (High Priests)
Theonomous culture lived out in a Heteronomous way.
36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
That doesn’t mean God leaves us void of leadership.
Holy spirit
26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
2. The Word - Jesus confirmed the OT.
and we have the cannon of the NT. Letters from the early believers that were used as teaching in the same generation as those that saw Christ.
3. Deacons and overseers.
The Bible is our Standard.
Do you know the WORD?
Understand the context.
Today’s culture.
