Introduction

Matthew 5:6 NASB95PARA
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed

Blessed, makarios (μακάριος)
“to regard someone as happy or fortunate in view of favorable circumstances”

Hunger

strong desire
Rocky 3 - “You ain’t been hungry since you won that belt.” - Apollo Creed
these are painfully aware of their deficiencies, and seek out Jesus because they are helpless

Thirst

term used figuratively in the NT to denote spiritual need
yearning for spiritual refreshing

Righteousness

“right standing” at its most basic understanding
used numerous ways in the NT

The Heb. ṣeḏeq probably derives from an Arab. root meaning ‘straightness

Bootcamp: “When a civilian enters the military, they go through boot camp. It's my understanding that in boot camp, the individual is broken down, and they are retrained to see themselves as part of the unit. They are conditioned to be disciplined to obey the commands of their superiors. In a sense, they stop seeing themselves as they were before boot camp, and when they look into a mirror, they see the soldier they have become, and the qualities that are part of that.” - Jerry Blaxton
right conduct before God:
follows God’s will and pleases Him
getting into and being in a right state before God is the supreme goal of righteousness
state or position approved of by God
relationship with God is in view
post action and position
There is a standard for behavior that God considers right, only one standard.
The righteous are those who seek out God’s standards and His approval.

Satisfied

to feed, fatten, fill; satisfy
There are few things as satisfying as reaching a major goal. Educational or workplace, relationships, financial, etc. There is a sense of completion when these happen. And yet, at the same time, there is a sense that something is still missing.
the desires of these will be fulfilled

Conclusion

The broad idea is that those who desire for God will find a fulfillment that is found nowhere else in creation. All other desires, longing, pursuits, and causes will ultimately leave a person empty and hollow. Even when a great quest has been completed, the emptiness that follows is deafening.
