Quick report from the report I heard at 1st Baptist ATL
Time of prayer for the Wilkersons

The Lord is my Portion

Jesus, our Lord, is our treasure
In treasuring Jesus we will treasure His Word
His thoughts towards us will be all that matters.
There will be a growing desire for our life to be conformed to His Word.
Psalm 119:57–64 (KJV 1900)
57 CHETH. Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.
58 I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: Be merciful unto me according to thy word.
59 I thought on my ways, And turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
60 I made haste, and delayed not To keep thy commandments.
61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: But I have not forgotten thy law.
62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee Because of thy righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, And of them that keep thy precepts.
64 The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: Teach me thy statutes.

Jesus, our Lord, is our treasure.

Psalm 119:57 “57 CHETH. Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.”

Jesus is Lord

In saying, “Jesus is Lord,” we commit ourselves to obey Him.
An acknowledgement of Jesus’ lordship is logically accompanied by a submission to Jesus’ authority. Luke 6:46 “46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”
Jesus is Lord. It’s the truth, whether or not people acknowledge the fact.
He is more than the Messiah, more than the Savior; He is the Lord of all.
Someday, all will submit to that truth.

Statement of fact

Greatest gift is not forgiveness or purpose in life but it is Him
We were forgiven so that we could receive Him
Videos of children opening presents and realizing their military day or mom is the gift.

Expressed often in the Old Testament

The Lord is our inheritance. Deut 18:1-2 “1 The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and his inheritance. 2 Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the Lord is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.”
We are His people and He is our God. Exodus 6:7 “7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.” Jeremiah 30:22 “22 And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.”
History of the God’s people will culminate in this moment. Revelation 21:3 “3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

Doctrine of justification

to justify is to declare righteous
How in the world did this happen? 2 Cor 5:21 “21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
Sidebar: We hold in our hands the Word of Reconciliation. If I am not consistently teaching how sinful man can be reconciled to our Holy God than I am not consistently or properly teaching the Word. 2 Cor 5:19 “19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.”

Expression of affections and aspirations

There are times we want something other than the Lord as our potion
Seen first in the Garden
Adam & Eve were very far removed from praying “the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want”
Less could not satisfy and more could not be desired.
Want so many things for myself, for you, for this church but I am already satisfied in Him. He is my portion.

In treasuring the Lord we treasure His Word

Psalm 119:57 “57 CHETH. Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.
It is not out of compliment that (those who love one another) keep on telling one another how beautiful they are; the delight is incomplete till it is expressed.”

Even in spite of opposition.

Psalm 119:61 “61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: But I have not forgotten thy law.”
You knew it couldn’t be a Psalm without some stated opposition.
Why? Opposition to the godly is the normal state in this fallen world. 2 Timothy 3:12 “12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
Live godly = keeping His Word

Do not focus on the opposition

Psalm 119:64 “64 The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: Teach me thy statutes.”
We see it in creation: the stars at night, the sunset, the laughter of children, his care for a sparrow.
We see it in his care for us: It is not always tangible but better. Peace, hope, love.

The Lord’s thoughts towards us are all that matters to us now.

Psalm 119:58 “58 I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: Be merciful unto me according to thy word (promise).”

Thy favour

What an audacious thought / often thank God for churches favor with our missionaries to support them, this is much bigger
This is what the Psalmist intreated / asked for
Saying “I want your face to shine on me, I want your favor.”
psalmist will seek with his whole heart

Back to justification for a moment.

Recognize our inability: Be merciful unto me according to thy word
Through justification we find the restoration to God’s favor, which had been lost due to our sin. John 3:36 “36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
So, justification is more than an acquittal; it is acceptance. We are now friends of God (James 2:23) and co-heirs with Christ Romans 8 :17 “17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”

According to they word

We are undeserving but we are expecting because it is His promise!
I do not know what portion of the word the Psalmist might be referring to but it evident throughout God’s Word that God allows us to know Him
It is also evident that our limitation of knowing Him is placed on our selves. Jeremiah 29:13 “13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

What a glorious place we are in to know God’s thoughts toward us

Because of justification we know His thoughts towards us are those of the thoughts toward His son. We rest in this!
Because of His Word we are able to know Him. We rejoice in this!

Growing desire for our lives to be conformed to His Word

Psalm 119:59 “59 I thought on my ways, And turned my feet unto thy testimonies.”

Time in the Word, caused reflection on thoughts, which leads to a change in our feet.

Reminds us of the story of the Prodigal Son, Zacchaeus, or even the fisherman in the Gospels.
My feet will not be properly pointed to the places I need to be for my kids, this church, my wife, or this community if I do not do consider my ways against in respect to His testimonies.
Are you living a life directed toward God’s word.
Time spent in God’s word has given the psalmist sober reflection about his ways.
In previous building Miguel was about to propose to Miguel. I didn’t realize what was going on. I was about to yell to Miguel and ask him what he was doing. Then Zack helped me figure it out. Small things.
When expressing my salvation to my pastor I told him I felt like I just realized I was standing in the middle of the road about to be hit by a truck when I was pulled off the road. The Word gave the warning. Why wouldn’t I continue to want to go back to it?

God’s Word would be in His thoughts at all times

Psalm 119:62 “62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee Because of thy righteous judgments.”
Daylight hours didn’t give him enough time
It is sincere, no one else is around
Regarded time as precious and gave up sleep
Found time with God more refreshing than sleep
Showed reverence even by rising up to give thanks
Unbelievers put these thoughts off. Acts 24:22 “22 And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.”
“How many, on the other hand, seem to pass through the world into eternity without a serious thought on their ways! Multitudes live for the world – forget God and die! This is their history. - Bridges

Looking up aligns my heart

“While studying the word he was led to study his own life, and this caused a mighty revolution. He came to the word, and then he came to himself, and this made him arise and go to his father.” (Spurgeon)

We are studying how the Lordship of Jesus should effect our lives.

This will unavoidable lead to a discussion about worship
Who is your Lord and how do you worship Him?

Solomon’s Three Looks

First and most often he looks around.

Ecc 4:7 “7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.”
He sees oppression, vanity, and futility.
The temporal nature of life is driving him crazy.

Second, and nearly as often, he looks with.

Ecc 9:1 “1 For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.”
Ecc 2:20 “20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.”
When he looks within his heart he finds depression and emptiness
At times he wishes he had never been born

Third, and least often, he looks up.

Ecc 7:13 “13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?”
We see in Solomon’s life, and in our own, that the external motions are never enough to sustain worship or a healthy soul for a lifetime.
In simple terms, we will worship Him for as long as we sincerely love Him. 1 John 4:19 “19 We love him, because he first loved us.”
Solomon’s idolatrous, wandering life has taken him far from God, which as given him a formal, distant, impersonal view of God.

Three benefits of worship we need in our everyday life.

Fascinating story of how iodine was added to salt in the early 1900s. During the draft for World War I, a Michigan physician, Simon Levin, observed that 30.3% of 583 registrants had thyromegaly as a result of iodine deficiency. / Our we worship difficient?
God deserved it. We need it, in our lives.
Sincere worship places me
Sincere worship profits me
Sincere worship portions me

Sincere Worship Places me

Ecc 5:1-2 “1 Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil. 2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.”
Worship is designed by God to put us in our place and to remind us of His place.
It is the recurring habit of uplifting God and of downgrading self.
Worship is a habit, a lifestyle, a heart condition that should be perpetual.
Life’s most significant distresses and anxieties come as a result of our “lesser lords” letting us down.
Worship is not the act of appeasing God.
It’s the act of adoring Him.
Modern day religion often attempts to “make God useful to us.”
The rush of our overburdened, over extended lives is not a product of God’s “crushing demands” but rather of our own.
Is Saturday the closest of farthest day of the week from Sunday?

Sincere Worship Profits Me

Mark 8:3636 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
False worship, in whatever form, promises hope but it does not deliver.
Worship forces me to consider what is rally important in this world.

Sincere Worship Portions Me

Ecc 5:18-20 “18 Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. 19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. 20 For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.”
Worship gives us the ability to be contented and delighted by what God has already given us.
A heart of worship frees me to enjoy my work rather than to be driven by it.
Sincere worship frames and filters the world around you through the goodness and grace of the Savior with in.
It allows you to see God as your source of happiness, not merely a means to it.

Worship leads to movement

Psalm 119:60 “60 I made haste, and delayed not To keep thy commandments.”
It is dangerous to make haste on a wrong path; it is glorious to make haste on the right way.
“Speed in repentance and speed in obedience are two excellent things. We are too often in haste to sin; O that we may be in a greater hurry to obey.” (Spurgeon)

Companion to all those who fear Him

Psalm 119:63 “63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, And of them that keep thy precepts.”

This creates such a wonderful fellowship among us

If then we are not ashamed to confess ourselves Christians, let us not shrink from walking in fellowship with Christians. Even if they should exhibit some repulsive features, they bear the image of Him, whom we profess to love inexpressibly and incomparably above all.
We should speak often together. Malachi 3:16 “16 Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: And the Lord hearkened, and heard it, And a book of remembrance was written before him For them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name.”

Conclusion

What an incredible joy to call Jesus our portion.
There are times you feel like Peter who said Matthew 19:27 “27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?”
But let us end tonight as Asaph Psalms 73:25-28 “25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. 26 My flesh and my heart faileth: But God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. 27 For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: Thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. 28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, That I may declare all thy works.”
