LAST WEEK WE SAW A PICTURE OF GOD AND HIS PEOPLE TOGETHER.
SUPERNATURAL. PARTICIPATORY.
THIS WEEK THAT CULMINATES IN A FEAST!
Exodus 24:1 ESV
1 Then he said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship from afar.
GO UP = USED 7 TIMES IN THIS CHAPTER CULMINATING IN MOSES REACHING THE SUMMIT
70 IS SYMBOLIC OF TOTALITY. ALSO, ANE IDEAL SIZE OF A BANQUET.
THE ELDERS OF ISRAEL ARE MENTIONED 12 TIMES IN EXODUS.
FROM AFAR = FORMAL DIPLOMATIC COURTESY OF A VASSAL MAKING REPEATED PROSTRATIONS STARTING AT A DISTANCE. SEE JACOB MEETING ESAU IN GEN. 33.
Exodus 24:2–8 ESV
2 Moses alone shall come near to the Lord, but the others shall not come near, and the people shall not come up with him.” 3 Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do.” 4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. He rose early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 And he sent young men of the people of Israel, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to the Lord. 6 And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and half of the blood he threw against the altar. 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.” 8 And Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”
ALTAR REPRESENTS GOD.
12 PILLARS REPRESENTS THE TOTALITY OF THE PEOPLE.
2 TYPES OF SACRIFICE: the ʿolah WHICH WAS FULLY CONSUMED ON THE ALTAR And the shelamim = AN OFFERING OF WELL BEING OR A SACRIFICE OF GREETING WHICH ALWAYS RESULTED IN A SHARED MEAL.
MADE WITH YOU = LIT. CUT

WHY BLOOD?

ONLY TIME BLOOD IS USED IN A COVENANT. IN LEV. 8 WHEN AARON IS INSTALLED AS HIGH PRIEST IT IS USED. ISRAEL IS A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS.
BLOOD = LIFE
GO TO GEN 9:4 - NOAHIC COVENANT
Genesis 9:4 ESV
4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
ISRAEL’S PERSPECTIVE ON BLOOD WAS UNIQUE IN THE ANE.
THE BLOOD RITE PREPARES THE PEOPLE FOR GOD'S PRESENCE. IT'S PREPARATORY.
Exodus 24:9–11 ESV
9 Then Moses and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up, 10 and they saw the God of Israel. There was under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness. 11 And he did not lay his hand on the chief men of the people of Israel; they beheld God, and ate and drank.
EATING AND DRINKING WITH GOD!
IN DEUT 12:7 - THERE YOU SHALL EAT BEFORE THE LORD YOUR GOD AND YOU SHALL REJOICE...
EDEN - INSTEAD OF BEING CAST OUT THEY ARE BEING BROUGHT IN.
GOD WANTS THE RESTORATION OF HIS FAMILY! FAMILIES EAT TOGETHER AT HOME. IT'S NOT COMPLICATED. IT'S PROFOUND, BUT IT'S NOT COMPLICATED.
AND IT'S WHERE WE'RE ALL HEADING...
Revelation 19:6–9 ESV
6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
THE KINGDOM IN IT'S FULLNESS IS INAUGURATED WITH A FAMILY FEAST - A WEDDING MEAL!
IT'S MORE THAN JUST FOOD THOUGH! BACK TO EX. 24
Exodus 24:12–18 ESV
12 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and wait there, that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” 13 So Moses rose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. 14 And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them.” 15 Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16 The glory of the Lord dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. 18 Moses entered the cloud and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
7 DAY CREATION IMAGERY.
40 DAYS AND NIGHTS - MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE BUT BY...
JESUS IS THE GREATER MOSES!
JESUS WAS IN THE WILDERNESS 40 DAYS AND NIGHTS.
JESUS WAS IN THE GLORY ON THE TOP OF A MOUNTAIN - WITH MOSES BTW !
JESUS OFFERED A COVENANT IN BLOOD. BUT IT'S NOT OUTSIDE OF US (SPRINKLED) IT'S INSIDE (CONSUMED).
Matthew 26:26–29 ESV
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
Hebrews 9:11–28 ESV
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. 16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. 23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
