Title: The Oil

There are some of you who turned me off already because of my title... On the other end of the spectrum, there are some who are like this is the good stuff!
Hear me. I am a Word guy... So let's see what the Word says...
There are too many who have taken this concept and used it as a gimmick to sell people on the idea of God like a snake oil. I believe they will face judgement for that.
However, I also think there are some who have negated the power in this symbol and then they wonder why their life is in chaos and turmoil.
So let's find out what the Bible says about the anointing...
Exodus 30:22–33 (NASB95)
22 Moreover, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
23 “Take also for yourself the finest of spices: of flowing myrrh five hundred shekels, and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred and fifty, and of fragrant cane two hundred and fifty,
24 and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin.
25 “You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil.
26 “With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony,
27 and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense,
28 and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand.
29 “You shall also consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy.
30 “You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me.
31 “You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations.
32 ‘It shall not be poured on anyone’s body, nor shall you make any like it in the same proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you.
33 ‘Whoever shall mix any like it or whoever puts any of it on a layman shall be cut off from his people.’ ”

Context

The Practice of Anointing as a religious act, was meant to endow the anointed one with the quality of the deity involved.
Among the Hebrews it was believed not only that it effected a transference to the anointed one of something of the holiness and virtue of the deity in whose name and by whose representative the rite was performed, but also that it imparted a special endowment of the spirit of the LORD.
1 Samuel 16:13 (NASB95)
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
In our text... the oil is being created. The Recipe is given by God.

God’s Instruction for Use

1. Douse Everything in the Holy Place with the Oil

God tells Moses, mix this oil then douse everything...
Exodus 30:26–28 NASB95
26 “With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, 27 and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, 28 and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand.
Everything in the Holy Place shall have this oil on it. Smear it on everything...
Story about the guys pouring oil on each other.
Funny story about Julie oil in hair...
Funny story about oil based smoke in smoke machine...
All we knew was that there was power represented by the oil… We wanted the power and the presence of God regardless of the cost!
If pouring the oil aligned us with the power of God, bring on the oil!
Everything in the Holy place was to be marked with the oil…
If the priests were planning on using it, it was to be marked with oil..
If it were to be placed in the Holy Place, it was to be marked with oil…
Everything carried the mark of the oil…
Everything was marked with the scent of holiness…
Everything carried the oil of anointing…

The anointing oil symbolized the equipping for service.

Nothing could be used unless it was first consecrated..
The only way a tool could be used was if it had an encounter with the oil.. It had to be anointed.
The anointing oil symbolized the equipping for service.
Ephesians 4:11–12 NASB95
11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
What are we doing here? We are pouring the oil on you…
We are consecrating you for the work of service…
It’s my job to equip you, for the work of ministry… But I can’t do that just by educating you… You need an encounter with the oil…
This is the calling of the five fold ministry: pour out the oil!
I am not the oil… I don’t produce the oil… I didn’t invent the recipe for the oil… But I am a carrier of the oil…
Peter and John at the gate called beautiful:
Acts 3:6 NASB95
6 But Peter said, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—walk!”
I can’t give you what I don’t have, but that which I do have, I give unto you!!
I may not have riches and gold, but I’ve got the oil…
I may not have all the answers, but I’ve got the oil…
I think the reason there are so many failed ministries out there today is because there’s a lot of people with talent and education, but talent and education can only take you so far… I NEED THE OIL!
Just as God told Moses to pour out the oil on the things of the Holy Place, so it is my Job to pour our what He has given me on you…
That which I received from the Lord I also deliver unto you…
Douse everything with the oil…

2. If it touches that which was touched by the oil, it becomes holy.

Exodus 30:29 NASB95
29 “You shall also consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy.
The oil represented the consecration of these things to the service of the Holy One…
But I find it strange that whatever touches them becomes holy after they have been anointed with the oil, rather than them becoming unclean as is the usual with things that have not been anointed.
Read it again… whatever touches them shall be holy…
But then I notice that nothing unclean was to ever be allowed in this holy place, so there was a separation between the holy and the unclean.
What was in between was affected by whatever it touched.
Once something had been cleansed and anointed it could never go back to being normal and was always separated from what was unclean.
In other words, once it was taken into the holy place and interacted with the anointing, it could never return to it's former use.
It could never go back to the way it was before.
It was holy forever and whatever it touched became holy.
The oil set it apart. The oil made the difference.
Some of the problem with what is happening in the church today is we have lost the ability to tell a difference between the church and the world...
The church has become so secular that all that is supposed to be holy has been returned to what was normal, and now rather than whatever it touches becoming holy, we have seen the secularization of the church to the point that now for many, nothing is considered holy...
This is not an us them, church people vs worldly people idea.
It is a call to the apathetic, casual christians who have lost sight that they have been made holy and your job is to make everything you touch holy...
You're not supposed to become more worldly so you can be relatable, you're supposed to be able to take hold of the worldly tools and the oil that is on your life makes them HOLY, set aside for the use of the kingdom...
We don't need christian bands making secular music, we need the oil on our lives to make the music a tool for reaching the lost!
That Facebook story that you have the polished side of your life on is not just for secular entertainment. As a born again, Spirit filled believer, the moment you touch that thing, it should become a tool for evangelism and revival!
We have it backwards if we are allowing facebook to make us secular, Facebook can't make you secular, you make Facebook HOLY. USE IT AS A TOOL!
All these people who are scared of every new technology have it reversed. It's not the technology that can make a believer secular, it's the true believer who takes hold of that technology and it becomes a HOLY tool of evangelism!
Your career is not just so you can make money and provide for your family. God put you in the career you are in so you can reach everyone in your place of work.
You are encountering people every day that I do not. It is your job to reach out to them! Touch them with the oil and watch the anointing of God take hold in their life.
Don't complain because you're not in a christian atmosphere when you go to work. Take hold of that thing.
SMEAR THE OIL ON IT and make it a tool to reach those in your work place!
Spread the Gospel! Invite someone to church! BE a BEACON of HOPE!
Instead we have feel good churches who teach everything will be all right in time, that everyone is going to end up in the same place, but that is a LIE!
Matthew 7:13–14 NASB95
13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
There is a reason scripture puts so much emphasis on spreading the message. PEOPLE ARE DYING AND GOING TO HELL!
It’s our job to reach out and give them the opportunity to meet Jesus.
As a Christian, You have the oil on you! You’re set apart for the express purpose of serving God.

3. Nothing should be like it…

Exodus 30:32 NASB95
32 ‘It shall not be poured on anyone’s body, nor shall you make any like it in the same proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you.
Notice it says not to put on anyone’s body, but later it says twice to anoint Aaron and his sons with the oil.
This verse literally translates as: It shall not be poured on the flesh of man…
In other words, this isn’t just perfume. You can’t use this oil to enhance your own image…
This oil changes your very identity…
Once a priest was anointed they were dedicated to the work of the Lord. When Aaron was anointed his identity was no longer Aaron, but priest anointed by god for the work of the ministry. We are now identified by the anointing on our life... Oil identity...
The priests were identified by the oil. You could tell someone was a priest because they carried the scent of the oil.
You could tell a person was anointed as Priest without even asking them. All you had to do was get close... There were many perfumes, but only one oil of anointing..
The oil was scented with special spices so that the fragrance would fill the space it was located. In the same way, the anointing fills the space where it is located.
When you walk into a room with what is consecrated and anointed you can sense their presence immediately.
You know at that moment that you are in the presence of what is holy.
When someone walks into a room full of consecrated and anointed folk, they can sense it immediately.
That's why demons will act out when they get into the room with the anointing. They can sense it immediately.
Most people can't tell you exactly what it is but they can sense something.
There are some who don't recognize the smell, they can't identify what it is that they sense, but they sense it none the less.
People who are familiar with the oil of anointing recognize it immediately.
Smell of anointing in prayer story...
Fragrant flashbacks. The Association for Psychological Science
- When you walk into a room and a smell immediately triggers a memory and puts you in that place again experiencing the same thoughts and emotions.
This is why you see some people who experience the anointing have emotional reactions because it took them back to a place where they encountered God and all that emotion and all those memories came rushing back...
We should be so familiar with the fragrance of the anointing that we recognize the oil as soon as we walk in the room...
Today we use oil symbolically, as a symbol of the anointing of God, but it is not the same oil as was used in the OT. So what does the anointing look like in the NT?

The Ultimate Anointed One

In the OT there were three offices that were anointed by God: Priest, King, Prophet.
Our text today talks about the anointing of the priests in Ex. 30:30
Exodus 30:30 NASB95
30 “You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me.
We read about David being anointed as king: 1 Sam 16:13
1 Samuel 16:13 NASB95
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
God told Elijah to anoint Elisha as prophet: 1 Kings 19:16
1 Kings 19:16 (NASB95)
16 and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat you shall anoint as prophet in your place.
In the NT Christ is called:
The Anointed One and is portrayed as fulfilling the three offices of prophet, priest, and king. He is, supremely, God’s Anointed One.
Messiah is the term for “anointed one” derived directly from the Hebrew word for anointed;
Christ is the same title derived from the Greek word for “anointee.”
The true anointing of Messiah is spiritual; that is, it is done by the Holy Spirit
That Jesus of Nazareth was indeed the Anointed One (Messiah) of OT prophecy was evidenced in his anointing by the Holy Spirit and by the miracles that followed
Luke 4:17–21 NASB95
17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, 18The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” 20 And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Jesus Christ is the anointed on of the NT and by extension, Christians also are said to be anointed by the Holy Spirit, enabling them to understand their faith and to live godly lives
2 Corinthians 1:21 NASB95
21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God,
1 John 2:20 NASB95
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.
In the old testament times the anointing was considered to be ON a person, represented by the oil…
Now the anointing is IN a Christian because the SOURCE of the anointing resides in you.
The oil on the outside is a representation of the power on the inside…
1 John 2:27 (NASB95)
27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you...
If it is IN you, you can't leave it at home... You're not going to forget it on the night stand and have a secular day because you left your anointing...
If it is IN you it goes WITH you and everything AROUND you is converted into tools for the spread of the GOSPEL.
Story about oil as weapon... It is a weapon because we are on the offence...
Jesus said I will build my church and the GATES of Hell..... When's the last time you ran from a gate?
Why is it we have people always up under attack, but never on the attack?
Can I help you with something? If you're a complacent, anemic, casual christian who's spirit man is atrophied so bad you can't even walk in the Spirit, what makes you think the devil is warring against you? He don't care about you as long as you stay the way you are.
You're not under attack, you're under fed. You need to feed your spirit man and engage in some spiritual exercise, get outside your comfort zone and use the anointing that is in you!

What does the anointing look like today?

it looks like making every moment an opportunity.
It looks like taking advantage of every nudge the Spirit sends you
it looks like walking in the Spirit day after day
it looks like calling the elders of the church and anointing the sick with oil.
it looks like unity in the body of Christ...
Psalm 133:1–2 NASB95
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Coming down upon the beard, Even Aaron’s beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
If you have Jesus in you… the Anointed One on the inside, you have been marked by the anointing!
Ephesians 1:13 NASB95
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
You’ve been marked by the anointing!
Which means, it is your job to USE IT!!
How do I use it? Spread the Gospel. Pray for the sick. Edify one another. Build each other up. Love God and love people.
Here’s the prayer: God help me recognize the anointing on my life. Help me USE IT in my life.
Call to action: Take this week and consciously look for the opportunities God is putting in front of you..
