Hebrews 11:23-26
As we walk by faith in this life, we see that there are many things that we need to do by faith.
But today we are going to take a look at an example that is given to us to show that there are times we need to refuse to do something by faith.
It would seem as though that may be harder than some of the other things we do by faith.
We live in a world that full of indulgence.
We live in a society that is all accepting, except for that which is biblical.
You must tolerate every lifestyle except that of a Holy Spirit filled lifestyle.
Everyone should do what is right in their own eyes as long as it doesn’t condemn them.
To tell people that something is immoral is to be classified as intolerant, hateful, misogynistic, and bigoted.
But God has called His people to refuse some things in life.
Just as Jesus did when he was living here.
Joseph was being advanced upon by his master Potiphar’s wife.
She was trying to seduce him, but Joseph would not allow it.
The Bible says he refused...
People have said for years in America, “If it feels good, do it!”
Moses was born into a slave family.
We know the story,
Pharaoh didn’t like the growth of the Israelite numbers.
He ordered all male boys under the age of 2 to be killed.
Moses was saved and placed in an ark, rescued by Pharaoh’s daughter, and later led the Israelites out of the land of Egypt.
Everything that happened to Moses, and that Moses himself did for God required faith.
Like Moses and his family, we are called on to refuse things that this world wants us to accept.
What are we to refuse in our generation?
There are three dangerous elements of the World that we need to refuse by faith.
I. Worldly Fear
v. 23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
The world, and especially worldly authorities can be intimidating.
intimidation brings fear to our heart, and urges some Christians to disobey what they have been told to do.
The only thing that combats fear is faith!
There are two weapons of fear that the faith filled believer must refuse:
A. Disapproval
v. 23b
Moses’ parents hid him because, “He was a proper child”
The word proper means to be elegant in external form.
There was something different about the baby.
There is no doubt that this was placed there by God to protect him.
But the world around Moses’ parents were rejecting all the Hebrew children under 2 years of age.
He was sentenced to death.
He could never be taken into the public eye again without someone taking him, or killing him.
But his parents did not fear disapproval.
God’s power leads us to not fear the disapproval of society.
AT times I have found myself in a situation where people of a worldly mindset laugh at me and my beliefs.
But I cannot fear disapproval of man, I need to fear God’s disapproval.
Stand for what is right, no matter who disapproves of you.
Yes we need to stand in power, and in a sound mind, but also in love!
Stand in love for what is right!
There are a lot of Christians today who allow the world to bully them into forming their
opinions for them
Parenting philosophies
Standards
Many Christians fear the disapproval of the world around them, and they try to conform.
We do not need to be arrogant in our beliefs, but we also do not need to be ashamed of our beliefs.
Refuse the fear of disapproval of the world.
Many Christians find themselves ashamed of their beliefs because they have not studied what they actually believe.
So refuse the fear of disapproval, but secondly we need to refuse to fear ...
B. Death
v. 23c
“And they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.”
Moses’ parents could have been killed for not obeying Pharaoh.
We have seen throughout biblical history that Men and Women of Faith do not allow the fear death to change their stand.
King Nebuchadnezzar built a golden image of himself and ordered the entire kingdom to worship it.
Everyone did, except three Hebrew young men.
Were they the only Hebrews there?
Of course not, they were taken with many others.
But when they were brought to the king to answer for their disobedience to his command their answer revealed an amazing display of faith.
And God did choose to save them from death.
God has the power to keep us from death.
It is up to His sovereign will for our lives.
As we saw in the earlier verse in this chapter, there were others who did not survive their stand.
Death has no power over those who believe?
Why, because we know where we will wake up just a few moments later.
Because of Christ’s work on the cross death has no hold over us any longer!
fear of death is a bondage that will hold you back from doing what God wants you to do!
We need to refuse the dangerous elements of Worldly Fear, but we also need to refuse...
II.
Worldly Formation
v. 24
24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
Moses being a Hebrew child pulled out of the water by Pharaoh’s daughter, began his grooming and teaching in the ways of becoming an Egyptian.
When Moses was old enough to understand who he was and what he was trying to made into, he had a choice.
Would his faith in God allow it to continue or would it cause him to refuse this formation?
Moses refused, and so should we!
How does the devil seek to form us into worldly people?
A. Through Identification
v.24b
“refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.”
He was called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.
But by faith he refused this title, this identification.
The devil just wants you to start by identifying with the world.
Identify with the world’s music; not the Lord’s
Identify with pop culture; not the culture of the church
Identify with secular philosophy; not the wisdom of God’s Word.
Identification is important!
People need to know you are a Christian by the way that you act and carry yourself.
When I was a teenager, I was eating with my family at a restaurant in Texas.
A friend of mine said he and his family saw us there, I didn’t see them.
He told me the next day that his mom laughingly said that when I walked, I walked with purpose like a I should be carrying a briefcase or something.
I took it as a compliment.
I did not know his mother, but I knew this guy, he had no purpose in his life.
As long as I knew him he had no direction.
