70 Bible Verses on All-Important Faith

Faith in dark blue letters against a light blue background with text from verses on faith

Hebrews 11:6 says “without faith it is impossible to please him.” Not unlikely. Not difficult. Impossible.

Thomas a Kempis, author of The Imitation of Christ, wrote, “Faith is required of you, and a sincere life, not a lofty intellect nor a delving into the mysteries of God.”1

The word appears hundreds of times in the Bible—in both the Old and New Testaments. Before we get into the Scriptures themselves, take a quick look at how different Hebrew and Greek words are translated into faith in our English Bibles.

Words like these appear in Hebrew:

  • אמן (‘mn), which means to be firm, reliable, faithful
  • אֱמוּנָה (emunah), which means steadfastness, trustworthiness
  • אֱמֶת (emeth), which means faithfulness, trustworthiness
Hebrew words for faith

And in Greek, we see words like πίστις (pistis), which means faithful, reliable, believing.

6. Galatians 2:15–21

We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

7. Hebrews 11:1–3, 6

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. … And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
