Introduction When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon…

(Share Personal Testimony) The Moody Bible Commentary a. The Coming of the Spirit (2:1–4) Pentecost means “fiftieth” because the Feast was on the 50th day after the Feast of First Fruits ( Lv 23:16 ). It was originally one of three harvest festivals, but in early (intertestamental) Judaism it was commemorated…

The world is full of false worship Today’s text is one of the hardest chapters in the Bible. It’s a difficult chapter. There’s certainly plenty of controversy and confusion regarding this chapter. It’s a chapter written by Paul, and it’s hard. In , Peter said of some of Paul’s writings, “And count the…

1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He…

Scripture If some speak in a tongue, then let two or at most three speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. However, if there is no interpreter, then they should keep quiet in the meeting. They should speak privately to themselves and to God. God isn’t a God of disorder but of peace. Like in…
3,000 people were converted to Chrsitianity in a single day. What did it? Was it the sound of a violent wind? No. Was it the tongues of fire atop the apostles' heads? No. Was it the disciples' sudden ability to speak in tongues? No. It was the Word. It's always been the Word, and still is today.

One of the desires that Paul had for the Corinthian church is that they not be ignorant about Spiritual gifts. I would imagine that Paul would have that same desire for the church today. There is a great deal instruction given to the church on the matter of tongues. Therefore it would be good for the church to take heed to the scriptures even when it goes against the traditions of religion you have experienced in the past.

One of the most untaught an controversial subjects in the modern church is "speaking in tongues" some accuse speakers of it as being unruly, or even demonic. But what does the Bible have to say about it?
When love is the ruling paradigm among the people of God, then consideration for others rather than self first becomes the mandate. The speaking in an unknown tongue is of no value and has no place in the church community except it be interpreted into the common language. Two signs regarding the purpose of tongues are discussed in this message.

After laying out what love looks like, the apostle tackles the issue of tongue-speaking and makes the point that it's purpose, under the motive of love, is not for self but for the church.
God is a God of love and order and both of those virtues are to be evident in the churches. In this passage, under certain conditions, women, tongue-speakers and those who give prophecy are told to be silent. In a day when people are worried about being disobedient to some supposed "spirit-prompting" Paul charts a course based on God's order, not on some purported "movement" of the Spirit.
