Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as you would Christ. Don’t work only while being watched, as people-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, do God’s will from your heart. Serve with a good attitude, as to the Lord and not to people, knowing that whatever…

Paul corrects the Corinthians view of leadership. First, leaders in the church are servants, deacons, and scum of the earth (more about that next week). Second, leaders are coworkers with God, tilling the field, building the temple - His temple. Paul gives them a warning - take great care in how you are building the church: there is great reward and great danger. Are we building well? Architects building temples or children building couch forts? We enter God’s temple in fear and reverence. We are God’s temple in fear and reverence.

Only some become workers who join Jesus in his cause. The cost is seen as too high. These are believers who have joined Jesus in his work as a lifestyle and have given up their lesser visions of what their life might be. They imitate his life with a willingness to obey, an intentional and courageous dying to self, as well as others—all of which opens our lives up to experiences of persecution and trusting God.
